Not sure if this quite qualifies as southern rock, but it's one of my favorites.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is the best Southern Rock band of all time which, by default, makes them the best band in world history.

A bunch of uneducated, blue-collar, self-taught guys that said **** it we're unapologetically making the most American rock music man will ever know.

On initial thought, I'd probably say Can't you See by Marshall Tucker Band. Love the song and think it has everything you need for a classic Southern Rock song.

But no song has the effect on me that Tuesday's Gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd does. So I guess I have to nominate that one. I love that song to death, but it also just kills my soul when I hear it. Not sure if it hits something inside of me from a past life, but whenever I listen to it I'm just bummed at a deep level, while enjoying the hell out of the song. Weird mix of emotions, and I don't know why, but love how music can be so strong.

I learned to play guitar by burning through my "Skynyrds Innyrds" CD on a constant loop in high school.

Gimme Three Steps is my overall favorite, but Tuesday's Gone holds a special place in my soul. And I get an immense sense of happiness when I hear that opening G chord of Free Bird.

Right now, though, I'd have to put Let it Burn by Blackberry Smoke as my favorite Southern rock song of all time. It is just perfect.

They also did an amazing cover of Tuesday's Gone with a band called the Wild Feathers.

Since most olds don't check out new music I'll toss in one of my favorite new bands that has a great southern rock sound.

I saw them live opening for Black Crowes last round and they were incredible live as well. Lots of good rock out there just have to find it.

They're more Americana or folk than southern.

I can see that. I always thought they were considered quintessential southern rock, but a GS of "southern rock bands" doesn't list them at all.

Doesn't get much more "southern" than this.

I LOVE that song, but I don't think yacht rock qualifies in this category.

And yes, I got the joke.

I was thinking (probably best for another topic), but what is the greatest Southern rock song actually about the South? And it can't name a state in the title of the song.

Would it be The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down by The Band?

Who (I think) ironically are from Canada, I like the "Cripple Creek" song also

Good point, but the singer on that tune as well as "Dixie" , Levon Helm, is from Arkansas.

That's country or country rock at best. Not southern rock.

More joints across the gulf south-have this album on the jukebox and probably played more than any other imo. That said "The Midnight Special" from this album. Origin is prisoners in the south. Lyrics first written in 1905. Recorded by Leadbelly at Angola prison in LA. Lyrics added by later by Leadbelly to describe the Central Unit in Sugarland, TX. Live version recorded at Royal Albert Hall the best version imo.

I'll go ahead and do it: Down's whole first album, Nola.

The second album is a bit more quirky and damn good as well.

Black Betty by Ram Jam

November 13th, 2010

Waco, TX

Texas A&M vs Baylor

Ags escaped with a 42-30 win

But I cringe every time I hear black Betty now because of that night.

If you were there you know what I'm talking about.
