The original is one of my daughter's favorites, so we went to see this on Friday for Father's Day. I thought it held up really well. It was very close to the original, but it certainly wasn't a shot for shot remake. There were some things that were different and better, though the casting for Fishlegs and Snotlout were mediocre. Overall, I really enjoyed it and will probably watch it with them again when it comes out on streaming. Definitely suggest if your kids are into the animated movies

Saw it last night...was pretty good. The sound in an IMAX theater during the last fight scene was pretty good with lots of deep rumbling bass. I can't wait to watch it on my home theater sound system in a few months.

Universal devoted a section to this franchise in their new park. I had no idea it was this popular.

Come out like 8 years ago? Why are they remaking it already?

Took my son to see it. He had seen all the animated ones. He liked it. I liked it.

You could feel the uncomfortable energy in the room from the parents after they played that Demon Slayer anime trailer.

Does fat Amy have a twin? I thought they were playing fishlegs.

We watched the original cartoon for the first time a couple of months ago. It was great. I had no idea there was a live action remake. We'll definitely check this out once streaming.

Took the whole family. I've only seen the original once but enjoyed it.

Overall I thought it was awesome! Gerald Butler was just an obvious perfect choice and he nails it along with the kid playing Hiccup.

But wow the other kid actors were annoying….like really really annoying….dont remember the kids from the original being that insufferable but the Snot one was the worst….the love interest (can't remember her name…think it was Ingrid) just felt way too Disney channel as well….

But the heart of the story is Hiccup and Toothless and that was just perfect! I'm a big sucker for films with friendships like this and man that was a lot of fun!

So yeah I'd definitely recommend this one!

Funny side story that happened in our theatre…

There's the scene (ok technically spoiler content here but good Lord if you've seen any "liar revealed" movie before you know there's a scene like this) where Hiccup and Toothless are revealed to Viking girlfriend and there's an argument between the two of them…

At one point girl says loudly, "ARE YOU SERIOUS!?"

Whelp…for some reason the line immediately prior triggered someone's Siri on their phone…so after the line are you serious was delivered in what was a somewhat tense moment, someone's phone LOUDLY immediately replies with, "I am always serious."

Dude….the whole theatre busts a gut laughing but we're all trying to keep it down because again it's a serious moment in the film but none of us (especially the guys) could fully contain our laughter which ended up making the whole thing even funnier….

Original came out 15 years ago. You're thinking the last movie in the series.

They are already planning a live remake of the 2nd one, too.

Not shocking. It's a pretty big franchise and this one had the best opening of the franchise, even adjusted for inflation. Doing live action for these 3 movies will make money at the box office and sell tons of merch.

Did they remake the soundtrack, too? Or just re-record the original?

I'm not typically a fan of animated movies, but saw the original in theaters and LOVED it. It shot up there next to Finding Nemo on my favorites list. Toothless is one of my favorite characters now.

Pretty much the same soundtrack. It isn't John Williams, but that soundtrack is still iconic.

Same guy who did the original, John Powell, did this one as well. Basically the same but a couple changes. However the big tracks like the theme, First Flight, Forbidden Friendship, and Romantic Flight are all in it.

The original has been my 11 year olds favorite movie since he was 2-3 years old and my mom showed it to him. He's obsessed. Has tons of toys. Currently playing Dragons Rise of Berk on his kindle fire as I type. We saw it opening night and we all really enjoyed it. Very close and similar to the original but as stated, some of the other kid actors were hard to watch. Snotlout was awful. I actually liked Fishlegs. It's the kid from Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Astrid was ok. Rough butt and Toughnutt were meh. Hiccup was good, and Gerard Butler as Stoic was awesome. Would absolutely recommend, and if you haven't seen the original, by all means please do. All 3 animated movies are really really good.

Saw this tonight. Thought it was great. Kids loved it. One of the better movies we've seen this year.

Agreed. It is almost as good as the original.
This was one of my kids favorites as they grew up, and mine as far as animated movies go. I have seen it many many times. They took me on Father's Day, and I could not think of a better way to spend the day.

Great memories.

Edit - Jokershady - don't know if you know this or not, but Gerard Butler was Stoick in the original animated movie.

I'm not much for live action remakes but this one was awesome! Somehow with Vikings and Dragons and the loud sound it just…..works.

lol…I do know that now but only found out a few days ago when watching Nostalgia Critic give his critic of this film…

Had no recollection of that from watching the original

I took the kids to see it last week. We have seen the original at least 5 times. This one was well done and almost shot for shot. The one big difference was saying that there viking dragon fighters from all over the world that came to live together. This was just done so they didn't have an all white cast and justify Astrid not having blonde hair.

I loved the final battle where they landed on dragon island. The visuals for that whole sequence was amazing.

Went and saw it today. Thought it was great. Haven't seen the original since it first came out. Just a fun movie.
