My father's day present was getting to watch a movie I wanted while the wife and kid saw something else. Love Benecio Del Toro, and it was a solid rebound from Anderson after the staggeringly dull Asteroid City. But even as a fan of his, TPS doesn't hold up to his top movies. Plenty of good scenes and situations, the end was fun, but there's not enough there there.

I'm a big Wes Anderson guy typically, but this one fell flat to me. It felt like someone parodying a Wes Anderson film rather than being an original.

Both Del Toro and Threapleton seemed miscast, and their delivery of the trademark quick and stilted Wes dialogue just didn't land. Idk if it was them or the lack of pacing restraint by Wes himself, but the end result was an emotional coldness/distance that made the whole thing just not resonate. While there is always kind of a quick snappy pace and off-kilter emotionally stunted characters in his other films, there's a usually a bit more emotional weight and breathing room to make you give a sht about the zany antics going on (Grand Budapest, Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, Moonrise Kingdom, and Derjeeling Limited being the best examples). Michael Cera was excellent though and kept it from being just a total slog.

Big fan of Wes Anderson, but this trailer didn't do it for me. Thanks for the reviews. I'll catch it streaming.

Well, I'll be a sorta dissenting voice I guess...but on behalf of my 16-yr old son, lol.

I've never been an Anderson fan. Don't hate him, and I "get" his style, etc., just never been my cup of tea. But somehow my son came across him and really likes him. He just likes Anderson's dialogue, set pieces, staging, etc. So for some father-son bonding we went to see it.

He didn't put it up there with his favs (Life Aquatic, Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox) but he said it was "good" (which is praise coming from a teenager).

I'm just glad he's appreciating something beyong dumb Youtube videos, lol.

Sorry for a belated bump. Finally caught this tonight on peacock with my son as well and I found it wholly endearing and great.

Witty, funny, and a great little redemption arc at the end. It's no RT or GBP, but is definitely upper echelon of Anderson movies to me. Better than French Dispatch and Asteroid City.

I'll disagree with an above post that I found them running a restaurant together and enjoying a card game at the end being "emotional coldness/distance." Quite the opposite.

They are barely blood but her influence made him give up all his world goods to just be with her running a shabby restaurant together knowing that it improved the lives of an entire country they'll never know the benefit of. I found it kindly bittersweet.
