I've thought about this a lot for Flash Gordon and this film and the only band that I think could remotely pull it off is Muse.

No one has the singing chops of Freddy Mercury, but I think Muse's sound most closely fits.

They're new to me, thanks to Peacemaker, but if you're looking for a close but updated version of the soundtrack I think Foxy Shazam could do a really good job, soundwise and vocally.
