People are shocked that folks who pursue a career in film and study it for a living have different tastes than they do. Never change TexAgs.
I would have thought they'd have advanced tastes compared to mine. That their list would have impressed me and reminded me how much better they were at analyzing movies than me. That I would have seen a bunch of great movies on that list that I had forgotten about.

I guess i skimmed through too fast...I genuinely just assumed that this was a list that a couple of millennial or Gen Z hipsters must have put together in 10 min. That esteemed Hollywood professionals could have been so wildly off is just baffling to me.

"More advanced tastes" is a really simple way to look at it though. There's movies I love for all kinds of reasons (and I'd think many others are the same way), some because of performances or cinematography or because they're really artistic or unique while others have fantastic action sequences, great adventures, or are just a really fun ride. Some I want to rewatch often while for others once was enough, but they're all great for different reasons.

This list leans towards the artistic as I'd expect for people who make their careers in film. There's several on here I really love like Children of Men, Fury Road, and Parasite as well as others that might not be my favorites but I can totally appreciate like The Social Network, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Get Out, and Her. Of this list there's only a handful I haven't seen, but of the ones I have even if they're not my cup of tea they've got creative or artistic merit that other people probably love.

This is missing some of my other faves, most of which I wouldn't expect to see on a list like this and that's totally ok (though the lack of love for the masterpiece that is Into the Spider-Verse is disappointing). We've all got different opinions, but just because something doesn't appeal to you or me doesn't mean it's bad.

Agree in some ways, but Arrival has sci fi, tense almost nerve-wracking scenes, edge of your seat twists.

The premise is pretty boring when you boil it down to just communication, because it's much deeper than that. It's also about how we deal with fear (particularly of the unknown), trust during crisis situations, how far someone is willing to go for what they believe in, the use of the military as a tool to solve all our problems.

Maybe those are artsy to you (and I can understand that view) but for me (language professor and former military CT analyst) it's like a movie made to speak directly to me.

Very much reinforcing the point I just made.

And really cool that it resonates so much with you, love when that happens with a movie.

That whole movie was tense and suspenseful to me. It is also deeply moving and borderline heart wrenching. ESPECIALLY if you are a parent. I remember enjoying the hell out of it when it came out, and being slightly moved by the major reveal re: her girl and husband at the end....but just rewatched this with the wife a couple months ago and, my goodness, it hit both of us hard.

Interstellar is similar in this regard...both movies will make me sob uncontrollably. Speaking of, how the heck is Interstellar not on this list lol.

I think they are talking about the initial list of 30 or whatever it was. Still, at 89, this list is awful. I put Interstellar in the top 3. And my list is the only one I care about, although I'm sure many would laugh at my list just as I laugh at theirs.

Need to list Top Gun as one long movie also

I like your list, fits with what I was talking about, the combination of art and entertainment has to be there for me to buy something as a great movie.

I like Top Gun. Seeing it in the summer of 86 on the big screen was awesome - I love war planes, although more of the WWII variety, but those Tomcats firing up those engines and the flight sequences were awesome. The characters were compelling. But my problem with the movie when I watched it again for the first time in probably 20 years was that it was essentially just a training movie, with only a brief sequence at the end of combat to show Mav's character growth from the hot head showboater he was in most of the movie.

TGM was actually about something, but still had the compelling characters. Never mind that what it was about seemed heavily inspired by the trench run in Star Wars. It was a fantastic movie.

Reading over that list feels like walking into an art show where the pretentious, acculturated, intellectuals are snottily discussing the allegory and sublime of what looks to me like garbage.

This x 2000.

I look at Top Gun now as just a slow burn setup for Top Gun Maverick.

We learn about Maverick, he loses Goose, overcomes his personal demons and endears himself to Iceman who apparently pledges eternal loyalty no matter how many more times Maverick screws up.

All of those things play heavily into the plot of TGM and the film wouldn't make sense without them.

Gladiator made their list and it released in May 2000 - it is #82 which is way low.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden. Dragon also released in May 2000 and it is on there at #16.

I just checked and Almost Famous is at #42.

Another film that should be in there is Traffic, it was released in December 2000.

So I guess it's any 2000 release date or later.

Most of the films on the list are fine. Sure some critically acclaimed blockbusters have been left off but it is not a list of unknown art films either.
