FINALLY got to see it after multiple weeks of work/Scouts/that one time the theater ****ed up my tickets. Outstanding movie. Way more intense and emotional than I was expecting going in. It says something about Hollywood in this moment that a puppet without a face is arguably the most compelling character on screen in years.

Saw it again with the kids this time. It was a perfect adaptation from the book. If the movie was longer it would have driven the non book readers nuts. If it was shorter then the book readers would have lost their minds. Great balance. And again, the sounds and music hit harder than the visuals.

I still think a 10 episode HBO would've been perfect.

Expand on Strout. Expand on the astronauts that died. Expand on Grace.

Who knows. 20 years later they did the same with Harry Potter.

Get Vince Gilligan to produce it. He is great with details.

There would definitely be one filler episode where the whole time Grace is trying to catch a fly in the spaceship.

It was announced they're doing a VR game. Weir is involved, and it looks like it's just immersing you into a part of the story vs trying to tack on a bad sequel. Hopefully they stay true to the heart of the story.

'Project Hail Mary' is Getting a Mixed Reality Game for Quest & Pico This Year

This movie has made me consider re-playing the Lone Echo VR games- fantastic zero G story games.

Remains to be seen if this is a good idea

Does Idris Elba really need the work? Anyways, I'm holding out for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Just watched it last night.

Thought Gosling was great, but otherwise thought it was Temu Interstellar/Arrival. Not deep enough from a science/save-the-world standpoint to match Interstellar, but also not deep enough from a emotional standpoint to match Arrival.

Would have been an enjoyable flick at 90 minutes. At 150+ it was a slog.

I need to read the book, because I can definitely see where in book format it would flow better.

Well, you're going to be disappointed in the book because it doesn't try to be either of those things, either. Sounds like you expected this to be something it was never trying to be.

It's space nerd problem solving porn. If that is your jam, you'll like the book. If not, don't bother. What the book does well is taking more time to elaborate on the problems they were solving in the movie.

Agreed, it was never presented as any kind of spiritual successor to either of those movies. I feel like all the marketing presented it exactly as what the movie was.

This is correct. The movie was a fine adaptation and it really worked for a fun surface level movie that was very well made.

But expecting interstellar is not considering the source material.

Also, I will die on this hill, Arrival is so overrated.

I will reiterate that the movie is a Buddy Movie set in space. The Martian meets Lethal Weapon.

This is not an empty hill. I'm there too. I thought Arrival was extremely overrated, saw it a 2nd time a few years later thinking "maybe this time I'll realize more of what everyone was so crazy about" and thought it only cemented it's super overrated status for me.

I also saw this at home, not in theaters -- so I accept I likely didn't get the full space experience as I've heard it looks amazing on IMAX.

But from a story standpoint, it was a quirky fun space buddy movie.

IMO a surface level space buddy movie has no business being 2.5 hours long.

And Arrival hit completely different for me once parenthood hit.

I think it's settled... Arrival > The Arrival > Project Hail Mary.

I'll fight. Arrival's source material (the short story "Story of Your Life" by Ted Chiang) is deeper and more emotional than the movie. I wrote a really long post about it when Arrival arrived in theaters that covered the differences and nuances in the original story. The movie did a good job of adaptation, but I'll admit that it might not have had the fullest impact if you didn't read the short story. It's excellent and worth seeking out.
