If there was ever a movie that needed spoilers it is this one

Gladys was such an interesting choice. It bordered between menace and outright goofiness. The entire final scene of her getting chased by the kids both worked and didn't work for me if that makes sense. It was straight up shot like a comedy sketch.

Really did love all of the cast in this. The shifting narratives was pretty damn unique. Especially in the case of Marcus since we
Know he got turned but then we cut back to him with his husband. That was a shocking scene when she finally activated her magic and everything clicked into place

Alex story was downright sad and horrifying. The ending with the parents and most of the children never recovering after that slapstick end for Gladys was sad as hell

I have never seen an audience go from laughing their ass off to outright horror in the span of a minute except when Gamdy is passed out drunk in the car when the mom stumbles out all jerky like and moves past the car. And then the click of the door and people started shouting in the theater

I thought the chase was hilarious. The movie was sort of acknowledging how ridiculous it was, which I appreciated.

So I think my one big complaint is the lack of explanation for Gladys' motivation.

Why weaponize the kids? What exactly was her end goal?

I got the impression putting people under her control gave her power and vitality. But the parents weren't enough life force thus going after the children

Pretty established trope when it comes to witch lore that they steal lifeforce/energy from others especially kids.

Gladys looks like she's on death's door before taking over Alex's parents. She improves and gets more spry after that, but its not enough, as she's still sick... So she steals the kids to feed off them in some way, and restore her health. You'll notice her hair has grown back some at the end. Her using the word "consumption" hints that she may be several hundred years old as well.

She wasn't really weaponizing the kids although she could have, but in the end they were weaponized against her.

I thought the chase was awesome. Horror and comedy are two sides of the same coin it seems, and Cregger is really effective at it.

My buddy was telling me before his Alamo viewing there was a quick interview with Cregger talking about why a lot of comedy guys are good at horror because they are so apt at setting a scene (paraphrasing) and that Alfred Hitchcock was in a comedy troupe in college. I'd like to find that interview.

The whole scene of the mom cutting Justine's hair was this goofy slapstick joke that was setup until the punchline of her getting in the car

I really enjoyed it. The ending chase scene will definitely be a bit polarizing for some. I thought the mix of the comedy of Gladys being chased and then the horror of her being torn up worked.

Cregger's already moved into my must see directors list.

All I know is the guy does zombies really well and is well suited to direct Resident Evil which should have an appropriate amount of campiness

So one of the things I didn't quite connect is what was the reasoning for the giant ar-15 in the clouds with the 2:17 time on it in his dream?

I get the time, but why the giant AR?? I thought it was going to be a part of the story somehow, but it never did?

Also, I loved the movie. Loved the mix of comedy and horror and how it was very uniquely done.

Worth noting that two of the breakout horror directors from the past couple years got their starts on Comedy Central sketch shows. Absolutely loved this movie. When the mom came waddling out of the house with the scissors, I locked completely in.

A) The chase was, indeed, awesome. Reminded me of the end of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, but the horror version. So good.

B) I saw it an Alamo Drafthouse as well and unfortunately the video is a little tongue in cheek. Or at least seems to be. After the Key & Peele mention, I'm 95% sure the rest are jokes, seeing as they're all photoshopped...

As much as I loved the movie, the only thing that slightly "bugged" me was the fact that this would have been THE biggest news story in the country. Like Patty Hearst x MH370 x OceanGate x whatever other bat****, nation-captivating news stories you can think of. There would still be press hounding that town, there would be countless podcasts and YouTube videos about the event, endless obsessive parent and amateur sleuthing/studying (a la what Archer was doing), etc. I obviously realize in that case there would be no movie, that witches aren't real, and that Cregger had the little girl voice over say the town/authorities ultimately covered it up. But prior to the resolution it would have been far too big of a story to ever cover up in the first place. Granted, it didn't affect my enjoyment in the least, I'm just saying it crossed my mind.

The chase threw me off at the complete tonal shift but it basically felt like a whitest kids u know sketch and was ****ing hilarious. Gonna try to go see it again today in a more premium format

I really thought this movie was headed towards a very dark ending. I was thinking the kids in the basement were going to be a different set of kids since it was the druggie that found them. I was really thinking it was going to crush brolin when he couldn't find his kid.

I loved the chase scene but then it just ended so abruptly that it kinda took me out of it. I was hoping to see a little more I guess.

Loved the chase scene with the principal and I wish I hadn't watched that scene when they released it last week. That would have been more fun as a surprise.

Overall really liked it, and I'm glad I saw it in theaters.

Seeing as how this movie is seemingly an allegory for the aftermath of school shootings, I assume his intention was to convey how the world just kinda moves on and loses interest fairly quickly.

I can't think of another trailer for a movie that basically shows clips from beginning all the way to seeing Gladys getting ****ing cannibalized by the kids and yet it showed absolutely nothing

Even ignoring her comment about consumption, throughout the film there were multiple references to parasites and control. It was being taught in the class, the principal and his husband had a nature show on about it, etc...

Am I alone in that the signal tower was an intentional misdirect by Cregger? Seemed like we were destined to go in the direction of The Crazies but went a completely different way.
Dr. Not Yet Dr. Ag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The point of the signal tower was to show the direction Matthew ran so Brolin could find it on the map and find a common direction the children were running.

Just seems like that could have been accomplished by looking at the video content they had from each address and what direction the kids ran.

Just seemed like it was frame in the picture in such a way that "a signal was sent out".

This movie definitely rewards repeat viewings

I didn't catch stuff like Brolins kid being the bully. The set up at the bar about Paul's injured finger

The big one is we see Gladys in the opening montage of the movie. First seeing the little bit of red hair you just think it is the mother. But clearly once we meet the mother she isn't red haired and we do see the scene again. But still not something I picked up on during first watch because I completely forgot the montage

I did think this was a bit odd...

Two things bothered me about the ending:

1. We spent the entire movie establishing the manner in which people run when they are under the spell, yet none of the kids at the end were doing the trademark "arms out like a plane" thing. If there is an explanation for it, I didn't pick up on it.

2. In the time it took the kids to chase an old lady thru 3 houses and yards, crash through glass doors and windows, then tear her limb from limb, Josh Brolin could not kill a 95 pound woman? I get that they did not want to kill off the teacher, or the little boy, but once weaponized we've been shown how brutal people become. Principal Wong murdered his husband with 20 devastating head-buts in 30 seconds. Why does Brolin, the cop, and the boy's parents all fail to even cause serious damage to their targets?

Ha, that's a good point on number 1. None of the people in the final confrontation (parents, kids, brolin, druggie guy) did the run.

I got the impression that Brolins weaponization had nuance to it to make it slow. Gladys wanted to gloat to her

Bragger gave Maddigan two choices for the backstory

One she was just an old woman who turned to black magic

The other being a creature pretending to be human

He doesn't know which one she picked
Proposition Joe

The movie leans into her being a parasitic organism quite a bit - so much that in the final scenes when Alex is in her room I was half expecting her to be some kind of deformed human/insect type creature.
