Wasn't he the chaplain aboard the recovery ship at the end of the movie?

Sux. But the old school astronauts still alive are all pretty old. Only 2 Gemini astronauts still alive, Dave Scott and Buzz Aldrin.

He was the Captain. They wanted him to be an admiral but he said that he retired as a captain and that's the rank he'll be.

The chaplain in the movie was Rance Howard.

Awwww man...

Apollo 13 was a timely movie for me and still among my all-time favorites. I was probably destined for an engineering degree, but it really helped nudge me in that direction. I was obsessed with the space program and Jim Lovell was a personal hero.

Glad he got to live a full life and was part of an incredible story.

Of the 24 men who flew Apollo lunar missions only five are still living: Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11), Fred Haise (Apollo 13), Dave Scott (Apollo 15), Charlie Duke (Apollo 16) and Jack Schmitt (Apollo 17)..

Charlie Duke is the youngest of those at age 89.

As a young kid in New Braunfels, around 1982, I rode in the Duke's custom van - maybe RV - from New Braunfels to Houston to watch the Unicorns play a HS playoff game in the Astrodome.

I didn't know who he was and have no idea how that happened, some family or New Braunfels connection, but never was around him again.

Around 1995 or 1996 I was at a party at someone's parents house and they had an earthrise signed by Lovell, Borman, and Anders.

I so wanted to steal that photo.

I've been fascinated with the earthrise photo since.

This man was an American hero, and not just from his time as an astronaut.

Apollo 13 is one of my two favorite NASA related movies, the other being The Right Stuff.

Apollo 13 the book (originally titled Lost Moon) is a really good read not just about the ill-fated mission, but also other key moments in Lovell's life.

There's a Facebook group called Space Hipsters where people will nerd out over space exploration. The cool thing is that Fred Haise is a member and will occasionally chime in with his experiences.

I went to high school with his daughter, Susan. Captain Lovell was at many of our school functions. 7 other astronaut's kids were in my class.

Everybody loved being around him.
