If he hadn't died from cancer in 1980, how would he have been remembered today? He is in my top 5 actors of all time in terms of his versatility. What do you guys think?

This car chase alone makes him one of the coolest people to ever live.

He would've transitioned into tough old guys pretty easily, somewhat like Eastwood or Newman.

But for all we know, he might've thrown as much or more time and energy into racing and collecting. There could be a subset of the population that knew him as a team owner more than an actor.

I really like McQueen, particularly in The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape.
By all accounts, he was hard to work with, stole scenes by fidgeting in the background & always wanted top billing. He latter movies were pretty meh & he didn't make many of them.

l think he would have rather worked on motorcycles that take second billing to anyone.

Love McQueen. I kinda agree with a previous poster- the quality of his movies seemed to be declining. He might have had a resurgence, but who knows. If he had lived into the 90's and early 2000's he could have done a few Paul Newman type things.
My favorites are probably Great Escape and the Sand Pebbles. Always loved Love With the Proper Stranger, but that was more of a Natalie Wood thing. The Reivers and Nevada Smith are great too. I always wanted to see Enemy of the People b/c it was really different for him but it is hard to track down, at least last time I tried.

My mom saw him at an Australian restaurant on the River Walk in San Antone when he was filming Bullitt.

I think he would have had a Robert Redford type of career in his later years. I just don't think he'd get involved in the sci fi, horror and comedy movies that really dominated the 80s.

Could definitely see him falling out of favor only to have a resurgence after being cast in an early 90s Tarantino film.

It comes on the H&I channel at 6AM. And it's new to me!

Fun fact: parts of Nevada Smith were filmed in my dad's hometown. Somewhere, there are couple polaroids of him and my grandfather because they were using buildings in town to shoot.

Holy crap, THIS! Think David Carradine in Kill Bill, but a hundred times cooler.

He did have a hot wife in Ali McGraw. Saw her a couple years ago in Santa Fe and she still looks good.

Crazy that he was like 32 here in The Great Escape (Solid movie). I think men just had highter testosterone back then, but also got way more son and ripped cigs all day.

On a related note. James Garner was 34 when they filmed this. When was the last time you saw a 34 yr old that looked like this. People were built different back then.

McQueen looks more haggard in that shot because of the numerous scars on his face.

ETA: plus he was playing a prisoner of war in a German camp.

True, but in other images and movies he looked very "old man" for his age to me. A ton of those guys did. It's always crazy watching old movies and looking up the ages of both males and females.

Hell the dudes from the 70's on the walls of our locker rooms in the 90's looked like burly ass kicking men compared to us.

I am so glad to see this thread.

McQueen was the epitome of cool on screen, though as has been said, he was apparently hard to work with.

Bullitt defined a type of movie forever, and invented the car chase. I have seen it at least a hundred times.

Soldier in the Rain is a vehicle for Jackie Gleason so it's not clear to me why McQueen took the secondary role, but he is excellent in this eccentric look at two career sergeants who can't survive without the army. His offbeat performance is unique in his films.

I have always loved Nevada Smith.

The Sand Pebbles is very long and is dark in theme, but the supporting cast is astonishing (Richard Crenna, Richard Attenborough, Simon Oakland) and McQueen is complex and amazing.

Junior Bonner is his take on the modern cowboy in a disappearing West. He is paired with Robert Preston, a scenery eater in his own right, and holds his own.

The Getaway is a movie I watch anytime I catch it on. It's hard to watch him slap Ali McGraw around, but it's a vicious bunch of characters. The part in the hotel in El Paso reminds me quite a bit of No Country for Old Men. McCarthy probably had it in mind when he wrote his book.

He was a major, major star.

Norm was in his 30s for most of Cheers, if memory serves me right.

Racing is life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.

That is great. And it reminds me what a great job, in look and delivery, Damian Lewis did in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" as a cool Steve McQueen.

If your mother is still alive, you might ask her if he was filming The Getaway which was filmed in San Marcos and The Riverwalk. Ben Johnson and Steve had a lunch meeting on a gondola in the movie

The film execs of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid wanted McQueen for the role of Sundance, but McQueen didn't want second billing to Paul Newman. Newman wanted Redford in the role and the rest is history.

Lol, or more likely a 2 pack/day smoking history, bad skin care routine, unflattering lighting, and the lack of cosmetic surgery and Botox that is rampant even among men in Hollywood.

Back in the 90's (I think it was) the Gap had a big add campaign of famous older stars in khakis. The one at Post Oak mall had a huge poster of McQueen in khakis. I went in and tried to get them to give it or sell it to me when they were done but they wouldn't.
