This is now available on amazon prime, it's emotional but a really good watch. I highly recommend it, especially if you grew up watching John Candy films.

Summer Vacation is the archetype of the classic 80s summer movie.

There was a documentary about the making of Home Alone and it mentioned John Candy being very generous and agreeing to do the film for scale as a favor for the director. They filmed all of his scenes within a single 24-hour period and he was paid $414 with no residuals.

Always liked John Candy. I believe the first time I saw him was in Spielberg's 1941. His was just another face in that cast that would become very familiar in the coming years. The Blues Brothers, Stripes, National Lampoon's Vacation, Splash, Ghostbusters, Little Shop of Horrors, Spaceballs, Planes Trains and Automobiles, The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck, Home Alone, and JFK.

The Dan Aykroyd eulogy at the beginning is amazing.

You're absolutely right. It was so good that I wondered if they should have saved it for the end. Hearing his kids talk about him was tough, they got way less time with him than they should have had and that'll never change.

One of my favorite parts was hearing Steve Martin talk about how he didn't like being mean to a character played by Candy, it sounded like those scenes from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles stuck with him even though they were just scenes. I also liked when Culkin brought up that John Candy was the most prevalent actor in John Hughes films, not Molly Ringwald and that never dawned on me.

Splash is the first movie I remember seeing him in, I remember we had a VHS of that movie that was always on. Uncle Buck is my favorite role of his. I have one of those hats that I wear when I have to run my snow blower, I call it my Uncle Buck hat.

I'm 48 and he was only 43 when he passed, he looked so much older than I do now. People just aged differently then. And his unhealthy lifestyle didn't help either.

Some other fun videos regarding this topic…

This a segment of nostalgia critic called "what you never knew" where he highlights little tidbits in great films that might be missed by your average viewer….its a fun one for planes, trains, and automobiles….

Watched it last night on a flight home. The use of the funeral readings and that last song *chefs kiss*!

Bill Murray cracked me up and summed it up that the worst thing anyone could say about him was "you know this one time he really milked this scene!"

Such a sad loss!

Then he posted this after some of the scenes were found.

Wow those are awesome. One of my favorite movies of all time and a yearly must watch around T-giving.

Those deleted scenes are great - adding some context to references in the film we just accepted as is. Like the pizza guy robbing them.

I think the pacing of the original works so well - but I'd want to see the extended version now to add to it.

I always wondered why the truck was a Wisconsin company just figured they were heading north back to Wisconsin but having it be heading back from there after bypassing Chicago is pretty funny.

Candy is a legend and beloved by so many fans and friends in the industry too.

Looking forward to watching the documentary.

Enjoyed the documentary, it was well done.

John Candy was a prolific and unique entertainer, and apparently a great friend and family man. I think nostalgia for my youth played a large role in my enjoyment though, just a nice guy from Hollywood alone was probably not enough to draw me in.

Great great doc. Growing up in the 80's those movies define a lot of my childhood...especially the Great Outdoors and Uncle Buck. I remember being very sad when he did, but I was still a kid. Finishing the doc, last night, I was even more sad. Im going to be really sad whenever its Martin Short's time.

I noticed Ryan Reynolds was a producer, which didn't surprise me, as I have heard that John Candy was his main influence coming up, and being from Canada too.

Wow great doc. Very moving. I knew it would be and kind of avoided watching it until I was ready for that. But it was so good.

Besides those mentioned before O'hara nailed it in the end. And Macaulay Culkin had the last word - and he was right - John was a unicorn. So unique that you had to notice him and he had an effect on everyone.

You could always see a glimmer of pain behind the eyes, especially in some of those interview - masked by comedy - but he was so giving and kind despite all of that. I just hope he knows how much he was loved and how many people he touched.

Damn that was excellent.

I learned quite a bit and in the golden era before social media, there was a lot about this man probably few knew about. Losing his dad at 5yrs old sort of hit home.

My dad lost his father I think when he was 6 and it definitely changed and directed my dad with how he raised us. There were quite a dew parallels there. Thankfully my pop is still with us.

Wonderful watch! Candy was such an awesome, genuine talent. He has some iconic roles and those were highlighted but also several that didn't make the cut. Great Outdoors, which is one of my top 3 favorites of Candy's, was not shown much. Especially with Dan Akroid as an interviewee.
I had no idea that him being a part-owner of a CFL team.

Yeah that was news to me - imagine with as much of an icon as he was in Canada/Toronto and owning the team. Looked like he got to hoist a Grey Cup trophy too. I just learned that initially they only put McNally's name on it but later added Candy posthumously and Gretzky.

Top 10 Candy movies for me:

  • Planes Trains and Automobiles - just the perfect blend of comedy and humanity, his most iconic role and the great John Hughes directing. Must watch for me every year around t-giving
  • Uncle Buck - tailor made for him and delivers in a huge way, crude at times but sweet
  • Summer Rental - again just such a great role for a family man, memorable and funny
  • Splash - really put him on the map and a perfect comedic counter role to Hanks
  • The Great Outdoors - funnier than you would expect, family trip gone wrong
  • Stripes - small role but so memorable as Ox
  • Cool Runnings - well done exceeded most expectations
  • Home Alone - very small role but who doesn't mention the Polka King when talking about that movie
  • Spaceballs - stupid but so funny
  • Brewsters Millions - great comedy pairing with Pryor
  • Honorable Mention - Vacation - just a small role at the end but helps bring the film home, such an endearing quality to his character
In 15 years from 1979 to 1994 he did 36 movies - 3 were voice roles, 3 were uncredited cameos, still basically 2 movies a year. Definitely one of the major comedy icons of the 80s for me and that was when I was 13 to 23 so right in my wheelhouse.

Plus 50 appearances on SCTV in the original run in Canada and 38 more on the US version in the 80s. Had his own cartoon Camp Candy for 40 episodes, several TV movies and also appeared on SNL once and hosted once.

I know I probably am swayed by them all being taken too soon but give me a comedy Mt. Rushmore of:

  • John Belushi
  • John Candy
  • Robin Williams
  • Chris Farley

It also seemed to me that during one of the games they showed Candy got the largest applause from the crowd. Even more so than Gretzky, which he looked upset about. Reminded me about an Aggie football game I went to where they were honoring world renowned Aggies. There we doctors, scientists, politicians etc. But who got the loudest applause, Robert Earl Keen! HA! The world loves entertainers.

Watched this yesterday and thought it was great. I got choked up in the first couple of minutes when his daughter was holding the camera and filming him and says "hi daddy". As a dad of two girls (our second just born last month), the thought that he missed all of his kid's life just hit me hard.

Also…his dad died at 35?? That man looked 57!

Oh and my wife and I watch Home Alone every year and the biggest laugh I get each watch is Candy's throw away line:

In Chicago?
No…Sheboygan.

I don't know why that gets me, but so perfectly out of nowhere!

When they showed the scene between him and Steve Martin in Trains/Planes & after seeing the documentary up to that point, I realized John Candy was not acting that scene. That was real.

Yeah I recall another interview not shown in this with Steve Martin saying it as one of the toughest things he ever filmed - because how could you be that mean to that guy, someone he absolutely adored. Can't find that interview right now but...

Here is one where he talks about the original long version of the scene in the train station - and a line that was cut - you can see how moved Steve was talking about John here.

That was excellent. Mac talking about how awful a person his real dad was, and how everyone in Hollywood knew it, including John Candy, and how Candy would genuinely check on Mac on the set.
