At long last this movie is finally, officially happening. Directed by Michael Mann. Based on his 2022 sequel novel. Filming next year for what sounds like a 2027 release...

Chance it's another Top Gun: Maverick instead of a Gladiator 2...

The last really good movie Mann made was over 20 years ago, imo (Collateral).

I haven't read the book, but that should at least give us an indication. Any Heat 2 book readers out there? Also, I'd argue DiCaprio's seal of approval counts for something (though I know you might disagree based on the OBAA thread). Otherwise, I agree about the 20 years thing, re: Mann. Ferrari was actually at least decent, but not great.

Butler's a better match for the Kilmer/Sheherlis role than DiCaprio, IMO.

I'm iffy on this. Heat is one of my alltime favs, probably seen it over a dozen times easy. But I'm a fan of letting great movies lie. Sequels more often than not just tarnish the feeling of the original.

If it's both a prequel and a sequel could Butler not play the younger Sheherlis and DiCaprio the older Sheherlis?

Oh ****, I wasn't even thinking about that. Interesting.

If De Niro just keeps driving, Heat might have been the best movie of all time.

I've read it. The villain in this, especially in the flashbacks is very scary. The future or modern day follows Chris (Val Kilmers character) after the downtown bank robbery and he is a hired "consultant" in south America. Very cool heisty/crime storyline. The former is more Vincet's (Al Paino) tracking down a bad hombre 10-15 yrs prior to the original movie's timeline.
I enjoyed the read, big fan of the movie and it had me locked in. Worth a read for those that like gritty crime and fans of the movie.

Anyone that has trained in infantry in the past three decades recognized how spot on those scenes were.

Loading. Roger. Loading.

Yeah that was good stuff well done by the studio/writers.

Thanks for sharing. That sounds awesome.

Rumor has always been that Driver is playing a younger Pacino. If so, and there's no young Sheherlis, then I have no idea who Butler and Cooper could be playing. Though I guess the script could have evolved since the book...

From Jeff Sneider tonight...

Quote:

At first, many assumed that DiCaprio would play the film's villain, Otis Wardell, but that was before Deadline's Justin Kroll clarified that DiCaprio is poised to play Chris Shiherlis, the character portrayed by Val Kilmer in the original movie.

That left folks to assume that Cooper would actually be playing Wardell.

And that could very well be the case. However, you have to keep in mind that Mann began meeting with actors when this project was set up at Warner Bros., and that studio loves Cooper, so my sources suggest that Cooper isn't up for Wardell, and he's actually being eyed as DiCaprio's back-up for Old Chris in the event that Leo says "no."

Quote:

For those who haven't read Heat 2, the book is half-prequel/half-sequel, so it follows De Niro's Neil McCauley and his crew before the events of the 1995 movie, and it follows Chris Shiherlis immediately after the events of the film, which ends with him being forced to flee from his wife (Ashley Judd) and their young son.

Given the timeline of Heat 2, I'm not sure how a 51-year-old DiCaprio would pick up where 35-year-old Kilmer left off, but if DiCaprio/Cooper are, in fact, being eyed for the role of Old Chris, I'm told that Butler is likely poised to play Young Chris in the prequel half of the film. Keep in mind that Mann could stretch out the timeline of the Heat 2 movie, which doesn't need to mirror the book exactly.

As rumored, Driver is expected to play Young Neil, who has a girlfriend in Heat 2. While Ana de Armas is a popular choice among fans of the book, I'm told that both Adria Arjona and Eiza Gonzalez are cheaper, more likely choices.

As for Al Pacino's dogged cop, Vincent Hanna, it remains anyone's guess. I'm certainly not going to second-guess Mann, who assembled one of the greatest casts of all time in Heat. Like Waingro, the director is real thorough, so he's not going to forget anyone. I'd just beg him to keep in mind the wild-eyed intensity of guys like Tom Sizemore and Kevin Gage, and the frightening authenticity of guys like Danny Trejo.

So I got this mixed up, re: Sneider's breakdown above. Driver would potentially be playing a younger De Niro, not a younger Pacino.

There's a 1/4-1/3 of the book that is about a heist prior to the original LA bank heist in Heat. I could see Driver playing a younger De Niro. Driver to me doesn't seem like a good fit for a young Pacino.

That heist involves the same original crew from Heat, so they'll have to find actors to play younger versions of all of them.

Unpopular opinion. Heat is a boring movie with the greatest modern shootout scene in movie history.

If this movie hits anywhere close to the original Heat, it might have the same effect on me as like 4 gas station boner pills.

I thought I read somewhere that Butler could be playing Kilmer's son but I could be mistaken. Either way I'm hopeful this will be a good one. I love the first movie.

I wonder what Bill Simmon's reaction is to this. I don't listen to his normal show, but I think he's done Heat like 3 or 4 times on The Rewatchables podcast.

I wouldn't go quite that far, but I do think its reputation is bigger than its overall quality deserves.

On the contrary, I believe it improves with age.

20-year-old me loves the armored truck, the shoot-out, Henry Rollins, and Pacino screaming, "She's got a ..... GREAT ASS!!!"

30-year-old me loves all of that and the dialogue (especially the diner scenes - Pacino v. DeNiro and Waingro escaping).

40-year-old me loves all of that, plus the nuance of the relationship between DeNiro, his woman, and his career, and the fact that he and Pacino are two sides of the same coin.

Put me firmly in the "brilliant movie" camp.

Okay, this may sound dumb to a lot of you and I may catch a lot of heat for this opinion (pun intended), but I think oftentimes having a cast that's too packed with superstars can be distracting and detrimental to the movie. It can take you out of the movie to a certain degree, and become more of "ooh, now look who's on screen!".

Heat really only had Pacino, DeNiro, and Kilmer as the "big" stars. Many others were recognizable actors but not big name stars.

Now, with The Odyssey I'm not worried about it because Nolin's scripts and direction are good enough and he has proven he can handle a star studded cast. But 2025 Michael Mann? I'm not so sure. This kind of screams to me, like, "Hey, let's pack as many big name stars as we can into this movie that we know everybody's looking forward to!".

Overall, I agree. But if it helps, in this particular instance, it sounds like a couple of these actors are playing the same character(s) at different ages, and Cooper, at least, might be a backup in case DiCaprio bails. So most of these actors likely won't ever be on the screen together. But I hear you.

That said, I'm less concerned about the amount of stars and more concerned that none of these stars look like (or even have the same vibe as) their apparent original actor counterparts. I can see Butler as a young Chris, I guess, but that's really it.

Totally agree, and I've mentioned it before. Like, go find good actors who look like the original casting instead of looking for big names. Like you said, Butler is the only one who slightly fits that bill.

Overall, at the risk of being a downer, I lean towards the the side of the original being such a masterpiece that Mann and Hollywood should just leave it be and don't try to recreate that magic in a sequel that will never live up to it.
