Looks like TPUSA and others are creating an alternative halftime show to Bad Bunny. Has this ever been done before? What kind of success do you think it will have?

WWE once had The Rock fight Mankind on USA during Super Bowl XXXIII's halftime show which featured Gloria Estefan, Stevie Wonder, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. It wasn't a political statement but rather WWE seeing an opportunity since Super Bowl halftime shows in the 90s were mostly garbage.

In Living Color did a halftime show in 1992 as a way for FOX to compete with CBS. Evidently it went well.

People actually watch and give two sh/ts about the halftime show?

Bad Bunny is performing because he is popular right now as evidenced by album sales, streams, past concert attendance, etc. I'm not a listener, but I know many who are.

The "alternative" lineup listed below doesn't really do anything for me either, but as always, to each their own.

As others have pointed out, alternative halftime shows have been happening with various degrees of success since the early 1990s.

The first one I remember was Beavis and Butthead's "Butt Bowl" on MTV in 1994.

That is a fake lineup, no? From what I saw on Instagram, this is being led by Cory Asbury, Forest Frank and Brandon Lake. Not really in line with that poster.

Thanks for all the responses about if this had been done before. Informative.

I'm sure dozens of people will change the channel to watch.

Also the target demographic is angry old dudes, and they are going to have to work a remote to go from NBC to some streaming app?

Super Bowl is for drinking, eating, and watching football. If all you care about is the halftime musical act, then you're either a woman or gay.

All this stupid fake political outrage is so annoying.

Dumb response. Trying to have a civil conversation and you resort to mocking. All of those guys have multiple songs with over 100 million listens on Spotify. Its not mainstream but they are not insignificant.

so many people are getting fooled. Makes me laugh to imagine some angry maga dude yelling "WE SPEAK AMERICAN IN THIS COUNTRY!" and then changing to the alternative show and immediately be deflated asking, "where's muh kid rock?"

As a 50-something year-old guy I consider myself pretty aware of prominent pop culture figures. I've definitely heard of Bad Bunny and knew he was a big deal. These guys, I don't recall ever hearing their names.

They are all Christian artists so that makes sense if you don't go to a Protestant church on Sundays. But 2 of them have had top 100 songs across all genres, including Brandon Lake doing a song with Jelly Roll. He has been on American Idol, The Late Show with Kimmel and has won 5 Grammys. They are no where near the popularity of Bad Bunny, but to just dismiss them because you are "pretty aware of prominent pop culture figures," seems kinda arrogant.

To be blunt, the biggest challenge of an alternate halftime show is thinking people are going to change the channel. Between the game and the ads and the halftime, most people are on the couch stuffing their face, at a big party, or in a bar watching the game from 5 pm until 11 or whenever it's over.

You'd have to be extremely motivated to not watch it, and I still don't really understand what the big deal is. Because he raps in Spanish? I couldn't understand what the hell Kendrick Lamar was saying last year, but I still watched it.

Wikipedia has a fairly definitive list of all the counter-halftime shows over the years.

I honestly figured they were country artists, so that's my bad for not googling them.

Is there a source for this? Two of those three are my Mom's absolute favorites and she'll freak when I tell her but I don't want to spread fake news to her just yet like the original flyer.

I love the measles special guest! Almost all of my anti-vax families are hard core right wingers these days. 10 years ago it was all the ultra left granola families.

Oh how the turn tables turn.

The SB halftime shows have been unwatchable for years. It is more about the "choreography" (a rather loose term these days) and dancers than the actual music. For many, it's on mute in the background.

In the case of TPUSA, they are offering an alternative for families to watch with their young kids with a few CCM artists. I don't see what the big deal is. If that's not someone's thing, they don't have to watch it.

As I recall, the Super Bowl halftime is about 30 minutes long and in the past, the alternative halftimes I've watched usually have a countdown timer showing when the second half of "The Big Game" starts.

An alternative halftime isn't a mistake per se. It just requires a really dedicated audience for that alternate content. And obviously, control of the remote / ownership of the TV.

For the 1994 Beavis and Butthead - "Butt Bowl", I was the primary demographic they were after.

In others' defense, Christian Music is definitely a niche genre (country music is too on a global scale).

And there are MANY Christians (this one included) who cannot stand the vast majority of Christian music. Music doesn't get much more generic and boring than contemporary Christian music.

I would much rather sing a 100yo hymn than any of this modern garbage. Give me "It is Well" over ANY modern Christian song. Literally, any of them.
