This is totally random but the "Diane Keaton in Godfather" reference got me thinkin. Did women really used to talk like they did in those old 60's/70's/80's movies?
There was a certain tone, delivery and cadence in a lot of those old flicks. It's like a mixture of innocent and subservient. Overtly feminine sounding too. It seems like it wasn't only limited to film, and that women would often speak like this in interviews etc.
For reference...Margot Robbie actually does a great job of channeling this in "Once upon a time"...especially when her BF delivers the news that hippies had invaded Rick Dalton's home..."Ohhh that's hooOOORRrible". If what I am saying still doesn't make sense...imagine a modern woman today, trying to sound like a well mannered 13-14 y/o girl. It can almost be annoying in some of the older flicks...but not quite as annoying as the way many modern females talk, to be fair.
Anyways, slow monday, but I have always been curious about this.
