So I think the last time I watched this was in a theater on its original run. I always knew it was a good movie, but was too young to truly appreciate it then. I wanted to watch it again now with adult eyes, so I splurged the nearly 4 dollars (Apple and Amazon have it) and gave it a rewatch.
What struck me first off was how amazing Sellers truly was. You can see why he wanted that part so badly…so different from everything else he played, and he could just lose himself in it. Which he did.
Then how the movie has much more heart than I remembered, and of course the ending. Even watching it as a kid I always had the feeling it was meant to show someone who doesn't recognize limitations isn't bound by them, and the final script line seems to back that up. But there's also the idea that he was just walking on something, and once again was being massively overestimated because people see what they want to. Part of me doesn't like the ambiguous (see what you want to see in him) ending, but that kind of underlines the point.
Anyway, even with all the late 70's cheese, it holds up great. Shame he didn't win an Oscar for it. But if anyone gets bored and hasn't seen it or like me hasn't seen it in forever, it's worth the two hours.
