Damn it. This one really hurts. I've dreaded this for a while. He was my dad's all-time favorite singer and I associated him with my dad so much.

Truly a legend.

Here. I've been a big big fan of his since the 80's. Probably seen him in concert a dozen times. Dude knew how to put on a great show. He could play it all. You know the respect he had in the industry from Springsteen to the Rolling Stones and The Clash all had him on stage. Truly a Texas legend.

Damn. This hurts. Such a great Texas performer, and a great guy. Hung out with him after several of his shows. Live at Liberty Lunch is a masterpiece! Prayers for his family!

Been over a decade, but the last time I saw him live. Such a great concert.

RIP... a great rock and roller.

Man that's a bummer. I got to party with him a couple of times out at Willie Nelson's place. I've heard him perform a bunch in Austin and once in San Antonio. A true Texas original.

RIP Joe.

Used to go see Joe with my late friend Shirley who passed in 2006 (cancer sucks). She always insisted on being early and getting a front row spot. She'd joke that we wanted to be close enough to see their nose hairs.

I have no doubt Shirley is checking out Joe's nose hairs now!

Losing Todd Snider, Steve Cropper, Raul Malo, and now Joe has really put a damper on Q4 2025. I've probably seen Joe around a dozen times and can't think of a bad show. A couple of shows at Antones when he had Teye with him touring the Letter to Laredo album were some of the best club shows I can remember. Letter to Laredo is still probably in my top 20 albums by anyone.

Here's a video of Joe and Todd doing Buddy Holly's Oh Boy on Prime Time Country. They recorded it for a great Buddy Holly tribute album called Not Fade Away. If you haven't heard it, go find a copy. This performance isn't as good as the one they did on the Letterman show, but Worldwide Pants has that one locked down now, so this will have to do.

REK wrote it but Joe Ely perfected it. When Joe Ely sang, you believed him…

The Road Goes on Forever…

Quote:

Joe Ely's version of "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" is stellar. When Joe toured with the Clash in the late 1970s one critic said that, when Joe opened, he poured gasoline all over the place and the Clash came on and lit the match. It was that incendiary. When the Clash came to Texas to play the Armadillo on Oct. 4, 1979, nobody knew what would happen because nobody knew how the assembled punk rock crowd would react to Joe. Joe said "Our attitude was 'it's Saturday night at the honky tonk and someone just shot a gun into the ceiling. It was one of those dangerous night where anything can happen."

RIP Joe Ely!

His Live at Antones has been played in constant rotation in my truck and on hunting trips for over 20 years. I've seen him live and also got to see The Flatlanders in NYC one night while on a biz trip

Years ago, I was at a conference in San Angelo. I went in a little blind about the schedule of events. I ended up going to one of the official gatherings and next thing you know they were introducing Joe Ely to the stage. There were maybe 100 of us at an outdoor amphitheater because most others left to hit some bars. It was fantastic!

Joe Ely giving The Clash a tour of the Alamo

Here's the text from Joe's wife, Sharon
"Joe and I took the Clash to see the Alamo. This was just after they finished filming the video "Rock the Casbah." I took these pictures. The bottom photo is of Joe Ely taking a photo of the Clash. Then we went to eat Mexican food and listened to mariachi bands play for us. It is a very good memory of times gone by." - Sharon Ely

I was at the same show.
He showed up at Bruce's show in The Woodlands (may have been the same tour, I can't remember) too.
After his performance with Bruce he just came back into the audience off to the side and leaned up against the wall to watch the show. Just stood there 5 feet from everybody else. It was such a cool moment.

RIP Joe.

Live at Liberty Lunch was a staple in the early 90's.
