I watch Die Hard every year but always have a difficult time accepting Holly Gennero's hairdo. Just plain awful. It just makes me think c'mon McClain, you can do better than that.

Interesting that Bonnie Bedelia, the actress that played Holly, is Macaulay Culkin's aunt

It's the perfect hair do that's says I'm married to the job. Her bosses probably loved it

More relevant social commentary in the film:

"The police have themselves an RV."

There's no way SLJ was a name before Pulp Fiction. Recognizable face maybe, but did anyone know his name?

One of my fav. lines from the movie... "They're gonna need some more FBI guys, I guess."

I'm going to call BS on that one. Sure, people in the industry knew him but a casual had no idea who he was just a "that guy" from Jurassic Park, Goodfellas and several other notable films.

I guarantee you the vast majority of the movie going public did not know his name prior to Pulp Fiction. If you did, good for you, but you were in the minority big time. Hell, I bet Jackson would admit the same if you asked him.

This is such a strange debate and I regret starting it with my sliding doors comment about Die Hard 3 and Pulp Fiction.

Call BS all you want, but the highlighted word here would include me. I don't give a crap about the vast majority that you refer to, that wasn't what prompted my response.

I saw both Patriot Games and Jurassic Park on opening day in 1992/1993. Prior to Patriot Games, I can't recall having heard of Jackson. Years later, I'd recognize him on a rewatch of Coming to America. I saw Goodfellas but don't recall him in it, it's been years since I last watched that one. But when I sat down to watch JP and saw him in it, I absolutely knew who he was.

Yes, he is in Goodfellas, but he only has maybe 1-2 minutes of screen time

The best aspect of the film is BIPOC Representation, specifically:

Reginald VelJohnson as Sgt. Al Powell:
A Black LAPD officer who becomes McClane's radio ally and main emotional support. Very important character. Powell is portrayed very positively and sympathetically, as very highly competent, and heroic. Memorable, and an excellent role model.

De'voreaux White as Argyle:
A Black limousine driver who provides support early in the film and then delivers a heroic punch to stop a terrorist's escape!

Grand L. Bush as FBI Agent Johnson:
Generally, solid Representation here, though it should be noted the FBI is not necessarily portrayed sympathetically.

Overall, the Black characters are critical allies ….Yet, unfortunately, they cannot be classified as leads.

However, there are positives. For 1988, this level of Inclusion in relatively strong secondary roles was progressive for the action genre (similar to Predator or Aliens).

Edit:
I'm willing to take a look at sequels, but Sgt. Powell is a pinnacle of Representation - insightful, even wise, and emotionally essential.

One thing that bothers me about this movie……how the hell did John tape his gun on his back during the last scene with Hans???

He probably applied the tape to the gun first and then positioned it on his back. Yes, he would need some flexibility but I think he could do it. The biggest hurdle would probably be his sweaty back and if the tape would stick.

The thing that should bother you is at the start of the movie when they show Hans and his henchmen exiting the truck there clearly is no ambulance back there. The producers admitted later they didn't think it through when they added the ambulance for their potential getaway.

I'm more bothered by:
A) A company Christmas party on Christmas Eve
B) Notre Dame and USC playing on Christmas Eve

I've got no problem with a corporate Christmas party on Christmas Eve. But according to Winsipedia, the latest in December that ND and USC ever played was Dec 10 in 1932, and USC won 13-0.

There's a similar blunder in Ocean's 11 with how did they get the flyers for hookers into the vault as well as get the money out (sure they use the duffle bags but that amount of money would have weighed over 3,600 pounds)

In my Battle of San Jacinto powerpoint (I teach Texas History), I used to have a sound clip of Hans saying "Shoot ze glass", b/c the Texians shot glass from the Twin Sisters. I'd pop that sound clip over and over. The kids loved it.

Also love "No more table!"

Finally, Bonnie Bedelia is hot with any hairstyle. Patricia Heaton could have played the role.
