I know we have the Sanderson thread on here but I do think this is thread worthy for folks who may not have read his books and do not check that thread. The deal Apple TV gave him for creative control surpasses what even JK Rowling and GRRM had on their properties

Quote:

The deal is rare one, coming after a competitive situation which saw Sanderson meet with most of the studio heads in town. It gives the author rarefied control over the screen translations, according to sources. Sanderson will be the architect of the universe; will write, produce and consult; and will have approvals. That's a level of involvement that not even J.K. Rowling or George R.R. Martin enjoys.

Can we preemptively start a book/no-book discussion war?

For actual discussion... I think some of these could work as live-action, but I'd really prefer animation for most of his stuff.

So I'm guessing if this is non book we need to be careful with spoilers?

Also, Sanderson has said he doesn't like the idea of animation because it limits the potential audience

If made properly(which it sounds like the author has creative control), then all the illiterate normies are in for a treat. This man has a whole universe that hasn't made a single show or movie yet.

This is the kind of deal all of us nerds have been dreaming about for decades. The fact Brandon has so much control is massive.

Definitely worth a thread, and I wouldn't post anything even in the vein of spoilery, on this thread. The Brandon Cosmere thread has all the spoiler stuff, so we already have a place to discuss theories and such that the uninitiated can avoid.

For those of you who don't know anything about Sanderson and the Cosmere... prepare to have your face melted by some of the best fantasy worlds, characters, and magic systems ever written.

Starting with Mistborn is perfect, as an introduction to the Cosmere for all the normies.

Posting this, from the other thread, which is what Brandon put out on Reddit, yesterday: https://www.reddit.com/r/Cosmere/comments/1qps9wy/update_from_brandon/

He is doing one of his "Lives" on Friday, where I'm sure he'll share more.

I'm so excited to get more epic fantasy, in our lives!

Here's hoping the Mistborn AppleTV series is better than the books which were average to me.

Mistborn is going to be a feature length film. The Stormlight Archive is going to be a series.

I know everyone is excited about the Cosmere, and I am too. But I actually think that Skyward could be an amazing TV series too, so I hope they got the rights to all his stuff.

That's a good thing then. Massive amount of boring filler and wasted time in the book series. I look forward to that then.

Like many, I heard this news first from that hollywood report article--read that before Brandon made his reddit post. I was very surprised at this. I would have expected Brandon to break this news himself, and it makes me wonder if someone leaked this before it was supposed to go out.

Are you referring to the entire trilogy or just books 2 and 3?

I thought The Final Empire (Book 1) was all fantastic. Books 2 and 3, definitely a lot of filler I don't even remember, at this point. It's one of the reasons I've never reread the series.

Now, Era 2 with Wax and Wayne? That's my ****, right there. I've read those books several times.

I'm just talking about the original Mistborn trilogy. Absolute slog. Loved the premise and ideas behind it. Execution was not great. It took me months to read book 2.

everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I think you are in the minority in this opinion.

I do agree to some extent, but I tend to be more in line with Lathspell.
The first book is almost perfect, and 2 and 3 are good but a lot of filler.

Yes, I know that I am and that's fine. I've only read a few of his books and I think it's a function of me reading his earlier works, but it's also kept me from going further. I plan to read the Stormlight Archive still since that seems to be his greatest work.

- Elantris: below average
- Mistborn: average
- The Emperor's Soul (Elantris universe): enjoyed this one

That's the usual criticism of Sanderson. His prose and fluff but typically the last 2/3 of every book (the Sanderlanche) is so enthralling it overcomes any of the earlier faults. In my opinion at least

I can generally accept most Sanderson criticisms. But anyone who reads the Final Empire and thinks, "Meh", I just have a fundamental disagreement on quality of story, characters, worldbuilding, and magic systems.

Don't waste your time with the Stormlight Archive if you think The Final Empire is an average story. It just doesn't sound like Sanderson is for you.

I'm rating it overall as a trilogy though. Final Empire was good. Well of Ascension was a boring slog. The movie can cut most of this book and I suspect it will. Hero of Ages was better than Well of Ascension but not great.

I'll shut up now; I'm hijacking the thread.

I'll definitely watch the film if anything to see how it translates from book.

I have had The Way of Kings paperback sitting on my shelf for years. Picked it up before I realized it was another incomplete saga, maybe when there were only 3 books out instead of 5. It seems those 5 may tell a complete enough story to get cracking on them? I'm sure someone will have more info.

I've gone back and forth between paperback and audio book for all of Sanderson's books, so I'm looking forward to this.

But, I feel like whenever there's a book that I love, I don't like the "screen adaptation". I liked GOT but I only read the first book of the series back a long time before there was even a plan for a movie.

I am hoping since Sanderson has so much control, that we will get a good set of films/series on AppleTV.

I think Brandon is definitely going to deviate and listen to constructive criticism, or at least I hope. Some things between writing and film are just going to be different. I do remember him talking about a few changes to WOT that he did appreciate (though clearly way more they ignored or just did flat out awful)

The first 5 conclude a major arc in Stormlight. I believe the second half will pick up some time in the future of the planet.

I've read almost everything he's written and enjoyed it. However, writing a movie is very different than writing a book. Sanderson has never written a movie. Also, the most recent Stormlight had some signs that he isn't listening to or using his editors.
I might be in the minority thinking that it might be better off with a professional screenwriter.

Sanderson is a pretty brilliant dude I am sure he will surround himself with someone who is experienced with screenwriting. He doesn't strike me as an egotistical maniac who won't take input but who knows.

I think as the author he is really really going to struggle condensing his work to an appropriate lengths without it feeling really rushed.

he admitted recently that Wind and Truth was published way too quickly and needed more time for the editorial process. That's a major part of why he's writing Mistborn Era 3 the way he is, to give it time to breathe and be a better end product.
Lathspell

He's been talking about the difference in screenwriting verses writing novels for years. He's spent years working with screenwriters and learning how to write a screenplay.

I'm sure he'll also have help. but he isn't doing this out of the blue. It's something he's been working on for years.

I'm glad he admitted this, other than Adolin's arc it felt like a step down from the other SA book

yeah i dont think he was anti-editing, it was more like Tor said "hey you sell ****loads of books, can you make them faster please?" and he said ok.

I'm glad to hear that, Wind and Truth was not very well written to the point of being distracting.

First two are utterly spectacular.

Words of Radiance is the highest rated book on Goodreads for a reason

For those of you who do not know anything about Sanderson, when he says "full time" job, he means it. There isn't a single writer on this planet who puts out materials as fast as Sanderson. The dude writes his ass off. Literally the complete opposite of GRR Martin.

But with the caution that WOTK starts slow. He's doing massive world building and that takes time. I slogged through the first half for a while...but once it gets going it really goes. the Sanderlanche is a real thing and almost always some of the best writing around when it starts.
