Watched this 4 part series recently. Hard to believe it's been 25 years (2/18/01) since the Intimidator passed. I was a senior in vet school at the time and remember hearing about it but was too busy to follow the subsequent story following Dale Earnhardt's death. Though I'm not a big NASCAR fan, this story was well done.

eta I looked for a previous thread and found none.

I'm not a big race fan and rarely watch NASCAR, but for some reason I was watching that race when he hit the wall. It really didn't look that bad initially. Was really surprised when it turned out that it was a fatal accident.

Watched the wreck live (which is kind of weird because I've never been a big racing fan), finished the race, turned the TV off and went to catch a movie with friends. Got to the theater and one of them said Dale Earnhardt died. I argued with him saying he must have gotten bad info, and told him he had wrecked but it didn't look that bad and he wasn't dead. He swore he'd heard the wreck had killed him.

I ended up eating crow on that one. Never would have thought that wreck would have the effect it did when I was watching it. Going back and watching replays I don't think I was the only one because of the way Waldrip is reacting in the booth. They finish the race and he then makes a comment about hoping Dale's ok.

I remember when this happened. My dad, who built and drove his own race cars at dirt tracks all over Texas, was watching. I didn't think the wreck looked that bad especially but as soon as it happened I remember him immediately saying that it was a lot worse than I thought. He was right.

I remember Daryl Waltrip commenting how violent that type of crash was hoping his friend was Ok live on air while celebrating his brothers first victory.

Always felt bad for Sterling Marlin because some fans blamed him and he received copious amounts of hate mail.

I was a junior at TLU and watched the race in Giddings with my Pastor from my church in Katy from growing up. He was not a fan of Dale (I was) and cheered when he wrecked, obviously not knowing the severity.

I left to drive back to Seguin right as the race ended, only to get back to my apartment and see the news. My folks had hung around in Giddings before heading home and had called me to tell me how distraught my old pastor was for cheering that wreck.

Horrible day for all race fans
