Laid around being sick on Sunday and watched Heat straight through for the 10th or 11th time. I can't think of an action sequence in a movie I'm more in awe of than the bank robbery gone bad and the way Sizemore, De Niro, and Kilmer take the fight to the cops in broad daylight on the street.

The one that first came to mind was the beach storming in Saving Private Ryan.

Pretty high up there for me too, but I think the scene at Cyberdyne in T2 may be tops for me.

The Huggies scene in Raising Arizona is the best action sequence.

Not a movie, but the Biker House scene in True Detective was amazing.

Crossing the border from Juarez back into El Paso in Sicario.

The whole chase from Cyberdyne to the end of the movie in the foundry.

From the moment they arrive in El Paso until they cross the border coming back. Masterclass in building tension.

The bank robbery in Heat is definitely up at the top.

But I would have to go with the entire movie: Warefare. Literally one big action sequence and the most intense and realistic-feeling action I've ever experienced in a movie.

The thing that always gets me about the Heat scene, is the fact they didn't damper the sound design. I know the number of people who have fired weapons in close in urban settings is vanishingly small, but they nailed it here. The reverberations, the echoes, the chaos of the loudness...that is what really sets it apart from even the best we have today. Aside from maybe that one highway shootout scene with Gerard Butler?

The final battle scene in "Master & Commander" is one of my favorites.

There are some really good James Bond scenes, particularly the opening of Skyfall and Casino Royale (Craig not Sellars)

But Heat is definitely in my top 5 as is SPR.

I think we all agree that this discussion is now over with my submission...

I will throw out the helicopter attack against Nakatomi Plaza.



We're gonna need some more FBI guys, I guess.

The night club scene in Collateral is one of my favorites.

True Lies last 45 minutes - Island shootout, Florida Keys bridge sequence with the Harriers, then the nuke, then Miami.

Might catch some heat for this, but...

The back-to-back scenes in Matrix Reloaded of the chateau fight, followed by the half hour action bonanza of the car chase, motorcycle chase, and truck-top fight.

Every detail in that scene was nails.

Not realistic like Heat, but this was jaw dropping in the theater when it came out.
