Ok so we're about to see this as a family and despite my wife's best efforts she didn't finish the book but dang she got close she was reading it in the vehicle on the way to the theatre….

Not sure how that will affect her watching experience but I think it'll would make for a pretty epic one….she just finished chapter 24 and that's where she's having to stop….

Yeah that was awesome! Acting was incredible. Rocky was incredible. Story was incredible. This was a 2.5 hour movie that did not feel like a 2.5 hour movie.

Haven't discussed the book with my wife but I will say the ending felt like a departure of what might have been in the original story. Don't get me wrong I really liked it but it kinda had that "tacked on" feeling.

I want a Rocky Lego figure to put in the media room….

And I don't know why this was, but the astro****e scene when they were collecting samples….that was a cinematic moment! Bet that looked awesome in IMAX. I could feel my breathing and heart rate increasing while watching that….theres a few cinematic moments I still remember from being in theaters as a kid and I hope this was one of them for my kids….

My only critique would be the music…not that the music was bad at all….but when the acting and story is SOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD like it is here sometimes I think it's a distraction….let the sad moments, happy moments, goofy moments just be moments without having music to tell us, "this is a sad moment! This is a happy moment!" etc……so yeah just a little less music for a movie that's so well put together like this one….

Anyone else think Ava murdered the other scientist because she knew Grace was the better candidate?

No.

Clearly she did in the movie...in the book, apparently not...ha

in what way is that clear in the movie

I got that with some of the soundtrack as well if I am being super nit picky…but my counter would be that having The Beatles song Two Of Us play in the movie when it did more than made up for it. Absolutely loved that scene and music choice/energy.

Some things from the book that I recall:

Rocky survived as engineer because his quarters were near engine, thus surrounded by astro****e that doesn't let any light/radiation to pass. His crew mates were exposed and succumbed to radiation.

Hail Mary was designed with a thin layer of astro****e in hull to protect crew from rads.

Grace named astro****e in the book, the President called it by name in his national address that same night.

When they captured the taumeba and lost 3 fuel tanks, all the fuel was contaminated. Generator went down first causing a life support issue. Problem had to be identified and then solved, ship cleaned.

They had to use 3 of the beetles to propel the HM back to blip a, leaving only one beetle to send back to earth.

As stated, the science behind communication was amaze amaze amaze, as well as the base 6 eridian math.

Rocky converted everything into earth time for Grace, exceptionally fast with calculations. Extremely talented engineer.

After splitting up, Grace used his petrova scope to check in on Rocky every day. He realized the problem with xenonite and taumeba after about 30 days. His method to find the blip A was super methodical and well thought out. Lots of math, and trial/error. Him finding the blip A was extremely satisfying and the reunion was very emotional.

Grace realizing he was a coward was really well done in the book. He knew turning around to try to help Rocky was death, after he just received a new chance at life. It was so compelling how he chose to sacrifice himself for Rocky, not for Erid or even the Eridian race, but for Rocky. He refused to sacrifice himself for earth and the entire human species, but he laid his life down for Rocky.

Some of my favorite parts of book were when they were hypothesizing how they can hear similar frequencies, the odds of both of them being there at same time, similar level intelligence, just overall similarities of two beings from so far away. Andy Weir has a fascinating mind and those conversations were very thought provoking but also very developmental and foundational to their friendship.

They needed the fuel from the beetles but they reloaded them with fuel from the Blip A so all four got sent back to earth.

Took my 9 year old this past Saturday - my second time seeing it. Enjoyed it I think even more - especially having time to digest from comparing to the book. Loved it the first time still.

My son loved it as well and he completely lit up at the very last scene - fun movie to talk about and get into the depths of the story and the bigger picture of life.

Theater was still pretty full which was surprising to see.

Anyone have any idea what sound effect was used when Rocky was yelling, before he escaped his enclosure to rescue Grace? Not sure if they did sound magic on an animal call, but that one had impact.

Saw this with my late 20s son in Imax tonight and loved it. Basically ET and Martian and close encounters smooshed into a fantastic movie. I will read the book soon as I really liked the Martian book.

The Rocky character is outstanding.

Great movie actually surprised me in many ways. Did not read the book (yet). Daughter had read the book.

Just a really amazing movie wrapped in a (sometimes spectacular) sci-fi presentation but at it's heart was a personal relationship story. Despite the over arcing save earth/Erid it really was about two beings. Their relationship was well done and what you take away most from this movie.

Had a few technical/science nitpicks but easy to overlook those. Statement.

Rocky is flat out one of the best conceived and executed alien beings in any film.

Amaze Amaze Amaze.

That was one of my favorite parts of the movie. It was reminiscent of Deiter from Sprocket.

Yeah, I am a book reader and thought it was a bit of an odd inclusion given how many critical items they had to fast-track that could have been beneficial to the watcher to spend a bit more time on

in reality- what are the odds that when we find aliens they will:

have empathy

have love for others

have a sense of humor

even most humans do not possess those aspects!

Any advanced technological civilization is going to need some form of empathy and compassion in order to cooperate long enough to build that civilization. Whether it would look similar to our emotions or be translatable is another matter.

There's lots of youtube videos of Weir talking with scientists about the movie. They give him a lot of slack.

I dunno I think a hive mind or AI dominated civ would likely have a significant advantage over humans.

If there are any aliens out there it's probably some kind of space cows. If intelligent species, they are probably going to keep their heads down. Unlike us who are just broadcasting to the universe our existence.

I dunno, maybe sci-fi isn't for you. This wasn't a documentary anymore than The Martian was. It's a work of fiction and suspension of belief is required. Next thing you're going to tell me Light Sabres are not real.

Take solace in the fact that Life Savers are real, and delicious…except the orange ones. I throw those in the trash.

Took my 77 year old dad to see it yesterday. he loved it. Much like me, his favorite line of the movie was Grace's "Shields up!" when the first "Blip B" is headed his way.

I really liked the singing by Stratt. She's a cruel b*tch in the book, and slightly less so in the movie, but still totally inaccessible to most human emotions.

When she sings, it shows her humanity bursting through. That's about the only thing that would save us in some sort of really terrible calamity. I don't like the Harry Styles version of it, but this one rocks, she's got great voice.

EW has the impressive story of how the karaoke scene came out of nowhere: https://ew.com/how-ryan-gosling-convinced-sandra-hueller-to-sing-karaoke-project-hail-mary-11926280
