If y'all use Apple Music for streaming, they have a playlist called Pearl Snaps that has lot of 80's and early 90's country songs on it, plus Choosin' Texas is the first song on the list

Is this the end of the rap country thing, or is this just a blip?

I think the sudden rise of Zach Top showed the industry that there's a huge underlying demand for more traditional country music with twangy teles, fiddles, and steel guitars. That late-80s through mid to late-90s country sound, IMO, was the sweet spot between traditional country and mass appeal.

I agree with the OP that the song is a bit on the mid side. Its success is more an indicator of the current state of country music than the song's quality.

Yes, exactly my point. My tastes in country music are more old school from the 90s. I love songs like Seminole Wind, Straight Tequila Night, Dust on the Bottle, and Indian Outlaw.

But what is it about Choosin' Texas that you don't like?

I also feel like there's also a solid movement of young women making their name in mainstream country with a more traditional sound.

I'd say it kinda started and gained footing with Lainey Wilson and has really taken off with Ella Langley and Kacey Musgraves with up and coming artists like Kaitlin Butts and Sierra Ferrell.

There's a good group of women that aren't the typical mainstream sound of Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert that are putting out some good music and making a name for themselves.

With that song name, more pedal steel and/or *any* fiddle would've been preferable.

Hah. I just listened to the outlaw Indian song. Or tried to. I made it like 45 seconds. What awful cheesy 90s garbage.

They did with that Tecovas ad at the end, but it's a good video and song for sure.

I was speaking more to the fake cowboy cosplay vibe, which they avoided. That was certainly a plug for their brand though, but at least they did it in a natural way.

We love this song. Her voice is great. The song has a 80s/90s sound to it. *Side note* she reminds me some of Elvis Presley

Indian Outlaw is a definitive classic.

The main character (Bear Claw) is a young Indian brave of mixed tribal ancestry, which is a very common theme in media over the last 10 years despite it being over 30 years old. Truly innovative and ahead of its time!

His squaw Running Water is a Chippewa chick, ahem excuse me, a Ojibwe female in the correct cultural parlance. He must have been a very worldly mixed ancestry brave to venture from the plains or possibly southeastern US up to the Great Lakes region for her.

Or maybe it is a forced reservation settlement love story. I don't know, the story is a little murky.

The song addresses some risque or downright violent themes unapologetically:
  • Masturbation - beating on his tom-tom.
  • Voyeurism - the squaws trying to watch him perform the aforementioned act in his wigwam.
  • The plight of tribal drug abuse - Smoking herb amongst the tribe.
  • Domestic abuse/tribal violence - The utter ass whooping Bear Claw receives at the hand of the tribe's medicine man, but it is not quite clear if Running Water is the medicine's kin but he likely plays some sort of fatherly role in her life. On the other hand, maybe he is pervy old man and doesn't like Bear Claw messing with his young conquest. Lots to explore here with the large geographic distances pointed out earlier.
  • Nepotism - Bear claw is the son of the tribal chief and is boastful about it.
  • Gluttonous wealth - He purportedly owns both a teepee and wigwam, so one residence - most likely nomadic in nature but still a residence - on the plains and a residence in the north.

The melody makes me think "tell me bout the good ol days," by the judds so if the writer's intention was to be reminiscent of 80s90s country, they hit that mark...i guess they hit it regardless of intent

Listening to her new album now. Really enjoying it. I'm usually exclusive to Texas Country or Pop Punk so don't have the most sophisticated taste in music, but I've enjoyed the different vibes on her songs. Her song Speaking Terms is a great song about faith.

While we are posting covers - we hired this little band from Santa Elena to play some at our county fair this year. The front man, Eli, is a HS senior in San Isidro and the bass player is one of his classmates. They're a great cover band with a big local following - but the treat of each show is when his little sister, who's 15 and I think a sophomore, sings a set. Like all cover bands, it all sounds better when you're there with a couple beers in the company of friends - but super talented kids nonetheless.
