Tom Cruise 'reuniting' with Jerry Bruckheimer for Top Gun 3: 'Script underway'

  • Paramount announced that the next installment of Top Gun is in development with a "script underway."
  • The studio's heads said that the project is "reuniting Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer."
  • Cruise also narrated a promotional video that paid tribute to Paramount's history, ending with him lounging on the studio's water tower.

I loved Top Gun Maverick.

I hope they don't ruin it with a cheesy money-grab.

Notice there's a crucial name missing from the announcement.

I've been sitting on this a while, since it wasn't public knowledge yet, and I guess it still technically isn't, but I was told a couple months ago that director Joseph Kosinski isn't coming back. He's simply too busy with his Miami Vice reboot (for 2027), then his UFO movie after that (releasing in 2028 or 2029). And Paramount understandably doesn't want to wait around for this to come out in 2030/2031 or whatever.

So, yeah, exciting news for sure, but it'll be a new director. And probably not one as good as Kosinski, but who knows. Maybe they can land Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote Maverick, or someone like James Mangold, either of whom could obviously deliver. We shall see...

Why do they insist on rebooting Miami Vice every decade? It wasn't that great to begin with. Nobody cares.

Maverick was ok. Not really rewatchable. Not something I'd stop for while having free time (what's that?) to catch anything on TV - which is all garbage these days. Nor is it something I'd hunt for on a streaming platform.

Maybe Tom is looking to compete with lead actors that chose franchise success (Harrison Ford, Samuel L, Sly) over Oscar-winning, meaningful roles. He's made a bajillion dollars and is a fan favorite for some. And he's in great company. No knocks there.

I guess I just grew outta the whole "actor worship" phase of life and am not impressed by meaningless stuff that has no bearing on my own successes and failures.

Top Gun Maverick: Highway to the Nursing Home

Admiral: Thanks for coming in at such short notice Capt. Mitchell.

Maverick: Well, I really don't have that much going on these days.

Admiral: Right. Capt,, are you aware you're the oldest Capt., in the history if the US Navy? <checks notes>, uh, actually the history of the US military as far as we can tell.

Maverick: It's good to be first at something sir. So what's the mission? What will I be flying?

Admiral: Drones.

Maverick: Drones sir?

Admiral: Yes, drones. It's all we could clear you for and that was a miracle. It's not bad duty. You'll be in air-conditioned room at a desk. Lots of screens. An X-box controller. Supposedly it's pretty fun. Also, you can listen to music and eat at your desk. We don't care.

Maverick: I see. One question. Can I ride my 1986 Kawasaki Ninja on and off the base at ridiculously high and dangerous speeds?

Admiral: Of course Capt. I mean, we are trying to turn a profit on this movie, er, um, mission.

Maverick: I will see you Monday, 0700 sharp.

It's a Rooster/Hangman/Phoenix love triangle movie.
