Notice there's a crucial name missing from the announcement.

I've been sitting on this a while, since it wasn't public knowledge yet, and I guess it still technically isn't, but I was told a couple months ago that director Joseph Kosinski isn't coming back. He's simply too busy with his Miami Vice reboot (for 2027), then his UFO movie after that (releasing in 2028 or 2029). And Paramount understandably doesn't want to wait around for this to come out in 2030/2031 or whatever.

So, yeah, exciting news for sure, but it'll be a new director. And probably not one as good as Kosinski, but who knows. Maybe they can land Christopher McQuarrie, who co-wrote Maverick, or someone like James Mangold, either of whom could obviously deliver. We shall see...

In the third one, all the jets are hit by an EMP, so Maverick has to strap the missile to his back and run at the target

No.

He's got to fire up his P-51 and go old school to take out the enemy.

Or maybe while conducting a test flight on some new, super-duper aircraft, he enters a time warp ala The Final Countdown and finds himself in WWII Europe, where he can fly new P-51s against the ultimate enemy, the Nazis with all of their "wonder" weapons. And then, unlike Indiana Jones (Dial of Destiny), he elects to stay in the 40s because that's where he belongs.

And then he marries a British intelligence agent named Peggy and they live happily ever after.

Warlock is the lowkey MVP of Maverick

Really liked his character, but this part was a bit hokey IMO. He was a nice counter to Hamm's role though.

Would love to see them up the ante where there is a real war going on, even if the opponent is using drones/AI fighters, and Maverick is an actual squadron commander. have them all flying off the aircraft carrier USS Thomas Kazansky 5-10 years in the future. Have Rooster and Hangman in a love triangle with fine-ass Phoenix, then she dies and they have to repair the friendship,

And how about some justice for my boy Manny Jacinto (BORTLES!) who got absolutely shredded for Maverick and then completely cut minus 2 or 3 long distance background shots.

Nah. Stuff the love triangle. One of the worst plot devices in cinema. Plus, a huge disservice to Phoenix. She is an incredible example of how to correctly portray a strong female character in a world of alpha males. Barbaro, the actress, spent some time with actual female Naval aviators to help learn the role. She was the one to lead the charge on nixing all the female discrimination and hardship that was in the original script which would have drug it down IMO. Instead she wanted to highlight the skill and perseverance our female flyers demonstrate and she did a wonderful job of it.

Having a sequel with an actual war with a talented squadron as just part of a whole would be incredible though. Budget and probably political biases would make it a non-starter though IMO.

Was REALLY trying to tone it differently than "She stomped down the WOKE that would have ruined Top Gun 2". Even I eyeroll at that garbage.

All my points still stand though.

ETA: And please don't get me started on love triangles outside of pure romance movies. No one is ready for that tirade. Not even me.
