My interpretation is that it was paused and the bell is reminding them that there is more to be done.

I think in Season 2, Tom will sort of conform to the demands in order to keep his son safe.

If you remember from his trip when he is throwing up in the toilet, the evil spirit of the island shows up, and Tom confesses he'll do "anything" to save his son. So my guess is Season 2 will be the island taking over Tom, his morals, and make him "break bad" almost like Jack Torrance in The Shining.

Really enjoyed this show, but I wish they'd left it as a single season contained story. It certainly didn't tie up all the loose ends, but I thought it did a great job of wrapping up an interesting story.
