With the weather forecast not being conducive to outdoor activities this weekend, I figure to spend a lot of time watching WWII movies or series. I had some time tonight with my wife working late, so I queued up Tom Hanks' wonderful take on the Battle of the NorthAtlantic,2020's Greyhound. It was short enough to fit into my available time tonight, and I am glad I rediscovered this one. What an incredible depiction of the role of destroyers escorting merchant shipping with the U-boots hunting them. Very tense movie with very little fluff, a little bit at the beginning with his wife and then right into the action.

I am feeling some Band of Brothers and The Pacific for the weekend, although I will have to pick one to go with given how long each of those are.

I was just thinking it was about time for my Memorial Day week rewatch of "Band of Brothers."

me and my 2nd grader watched Red Tails last night. He loved it, because they were apparently discussing them in class this week so it made a real life connection for him.

While I did enjoy that movie, I hope you explained that WWII aircraft did not move quite like they were depicted in that movie.

Not WW2 but The Grant documentary on Prime is very good and I would recommend.

Finished The Pacific tonight. After having watched Band of Brothers through yesterday. First time I have watched these masterpieces back to back. I am emotionally spent.

As wangus said, 10 hours.

Since you've never watched it, be advised that The Pacific is a far different experience than Band of Brothers. While both are gritty and depict the horrors of war very well, The Pacific is constrained by the realities of the Pacific campaign. This prevents following a cohesive unit from inception to conclusion. Instead, the series focuses on three individuals, with supporting characters, throughout; two of the primary characters briefly interact although I suspect that was a dramatic insertion not based on anything that actually happened.

The characters are John Basilone, Robert Leckie, and Eugene Sledge (portrayed by none other than Timmy from Jurassic Park). I feel like I got to know these men on a deeper level than any in Band of Brothers simply due to the amount of time given to each of them.

The Pacific is based on multiple books, primarily With the Old Breed written by Sledge, and Helmet for my Pillow written by Leckie. I have read both of those. The series captures what those men wrote of their experiences pretty well, but does take some dramatic license along the way. You could easily skip episode 3 (I refer to this one as the sex episode) as it doesn't really add anything to the war aspect of the series. Also be aware that there are lots of sequences that are shot in nighttime with rain, which makes it difficult to see everything going on - but this was accurate to the battles they depict in a lot of cases.

I rank The Pacific slightly higher than Band of Brothers due to how it captured the essence of the Pacific war and depicted the impact of war on the human soul. You see a lot of that impact along the way, but it all comes to a head in the final episode.

I had listened to the Hardcore History 6-part series on the war in the pacific before watching the Pacific, so a lot of it I'd known about beforehand. Either format is brutal.

The Pacific was good, but I'll probably never watch it again.
