Most obscure song that became synonymous with a movie

The silence of the lambs is one of my favorite movies of all time, and the Q Lazzarus song "good bye horses" absolutely makes the scene with Buffalo Bill dancing in the mirror. The movie wouldn't be the same without it.

Q Lazzarus never had a hit, the only reason this was included in the movie is that she played it for Johnathan Demme while she was driving him in her cab in NYC. The song never charted, and she never made any money off of it other than the initial payment for usage in the movie.

Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon in Pulp Fiction. The original Neil Diamond version is not obscure, but the Urge Overkill cover is only known because Tarantino included it in the movie.

Surprise no quick mention for Stuck in the Middle With You in Reservoir Dogs. Somewhat random song, and I think if you've seen the movie it's hard to disassociate the song from it.

Would be hard for me to think of any examples with "obscure" songs associated with movies but dang there's plenty of recognizable ones I will ALWAYS associate with films I've seen….

Bad to the Bones - T2
Tequila - The Sandlot / TMNT (original)
It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas - Home Alone 2
All-Star - Shrek
How Do I Live - Con-Air

Just to name a few….

That song wasn't obscure though. It was pretty well known before the movie.

That makes sense. I'm unfamiliar with the band but it looks like this was their only hit. Hard for a one hit wonder song to be obscure. I retract my suggestion!

In 2005-ish midway through my years at A&M, Garden State was huge, and nobody had heard The Shins. "New Slang" couldn't be separated from the film.

Gogi Grant originally sang and made the song "The Wayward Wind" famous. Written by Herb Newman and Stanley Lebowsky, her 1956 recording hit #1 on the Billboard charts and famously bumped Elvis Presley's "Heartbreak Hotel" from the top spot.

I had literally never heard that song and didn't know it existed until Role Models. I thought it was a joke throughout the movie.

It's not a wings song, it was made up for the movie.

Without a doubt the Cars' "Moving in Stereo" from the infamous Phoebe Cates pool scene in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."

Album cut, not released as a single in the U.S., not included on the movie soundtrack. But for people of a certain age, hearing that song brings back one single memory.

The Coen's could populate this list pretty fully.

I love the way they find obscure gems and bring them to life in their movies.

Way Out There by Carter Burwell is a perfect example. It cracks me up every dang time!

Just about every song in O Brother Where Art Thou, but most particularly Man of Constant Sorrow.

Don't You Forget About Me - Simple Minds - The Breakfast Club
-Random mostly unknown band from Scotland
-Supposedly doesn't sound like any of their other sutff (though I don't know anything else by them)
-Singer hated the song and didn't want to do it
-Never included on any album of theirs
-The most defining song from one of the most defining movies of the 80s

Armageddon - Don't want to miss a thing

I have always hated that scene, so I have always hated that song.

Edit, I guess that wasn't an obscure song. My mind drifted after reading some of the other comments and forgot the premise.

The song wasn't obscure though. It was a top 5 hit in the 70s.
