This will be a reach, but I'm trying to remember an oldies song that was kind of like Mack the Knife - same era and type of song.

I thought it was called "that black magic", but I googled that and it was too big band sounding.

Got no idea the name or artist, so without being able to hum it, maybe someone can throw out some ideas.

Try "That Old Black Magic" by Louis Prima & Keely Smith.

"Round and round I go, down and down I go."

Nope, that song is too fast. Black magic may not even be in the title. It was a slow lounge type of song that had a quiet bass riff for the bridge. This will drive me crazy - I'll just have to listen to an oldies station until I hear it again.

Does a man or a woman sing it?

What instruments are playing?

How does it start?

What's the tempo?

Do you know any words at all?

Are either of the words "black" or "magic" in it?

Drum sticks or brushes?

What instument plays the lead on the bridge?

"Mack The Knife" by Bobby Darin was a hit in the late fifties, although the song was written in the twenties.

Louis Armstrong had a earlier hit on it too.

Can you be more specific about the era?

do-do-bum-bum-bum-bum

do-do-do da-da-da do-do-do da-da-da

Did you hear the song on the radio here in Houston? You can look up what songs they played on Oldies 107.5 if that's where you heard it.

I'm betting Fast Fred has the song right, but you're just used to hearing a different version.

Just off the top of my head, Louis Prima, Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Billy Daniels all recorded versions of that song.

"Forty years ago kids talked about their duties and responsibilities ... today they talk about their rights and privileges."

Is it the same song that the assistant principal sings in the bathroom in "Porky's"?

I too thought of The Drifter's "This Magic Moment" and then there's "The Magic Touch" by The Platters.

I'll google for some .wav clips and see.

I am pretty sure "magic" is in the chorus.

Thanks

none of those. the word magic probably isn't the right word anyway. this is a wild goose chase, but I will figure it out, because I'll go crazy till I do... then I'll post it.

It is more of a lounge song like Mack the Knife. Those songs were too big band sounding.

So, a song sort of like Mack the Knife that may or may not have the word "magic" in the lyrics. That should be enough to go on. My guesses:

"Can't Get Used to Losing You" by Andy Williams; or

"Danke Schoen" by Wayne Newton.

How about "Chances Are" by Johnny Mathis?

Here's the lyric and the chorus seems to fit your hum pattern to some degree:

Clearly the answer was "Anna (Go To Him)" by Arthur Alexander.
