ie just have him get tackled in bounds

Plus, the announcer said he got out of bounds. Then said the clock would start again when they moved the chains.

But, it was just a pilot.

I agree that it was only OK. A short rendition of the movie, which I didn’t think was that great either. And I really think that each episode will be very similar - some character development and some high school socializing, then a game.

Plus, I hated the fact that the camera kept shaking during the normal scenes (not during the game).

I thought it was a lot like Varsity Blues too, while VB was like an amped up version of reality, this was more real. Probably because originally VB was supposed to be Friday Night Lights.

I was surprised with how good this show was. The movie didn't really lift my skirt, but the show was a lot better. I didn't realize that Peter Berg also wrote and directed the TV show. And it's a bit confusing having Connie Britton (hottie) playing the exact same role, but a different person, in the movie and the tv show.

All in all, it was a great show, and I look forward to watching it for the rest of the year.

I wouldn't get too attached, it's ratings were pretty dismal...any additional fall-off and it likely won't last even a third of the season. Networks have a pretty quick hook these days.

According to Wikipedia, the budget for FNL is $1.5 mil per episode. Some of these other shows, with well paid stars, have been up to and over $10 mil per episode.

The critics seem to really like it, and there is great cross promotion with NBC's football slate. For these reasons alone it will get a full seaon to start developing a following, and I hope it does.

Awesome showing. Cool, they are making us wait for the second game.

It's very predictable but done well. I'm pretty sure the paralyzed guy is coming back and there is going to be a qb fight.

I think its great. And tonight was fantastic. The coach is extremely believable as a Texas HS football coach.

My thoughts:

1. THe guy playing the head coach is excellent, but the random townspeople are overdoing it.

2. Apparently, there are no Hispanics in Texas. This oversight in this series is worse because there is a MAJOR hispanic character in the book and movie. It is also a bit unexplainable since they don't come from a Super Elite town (like Westlake). I feel like the series is trying to portray Texas in the stereotypical Black/White context.

3. This is starting to resemble Varsity Blues more than the movie or book.

And the only reason I bring the Hispanic thing up is because of the Sports Guy having trouble for awhile of accepting the fact that many of the sports movies he loves(Hoosiers etc) might be viewed differently from a Black person's perspective.

I just wanted to point it out.

Yeah, Texas is 50-50 black white with no Mesicans.

There is an Hispanic character in the next couple of episodes, but he won't be portrayed in the best light.

As the story goes on, it will look less like hte book, the movie, and much less like Varsity Blues. It's going to be less of a music video, and more about character development.

I'm giving a thumbs up to all of the prayer being portrayed in a positive manner - when is the last time you saw that from Hollywood.

I'm enjoying the hell out of it. It's a zillion times better than having to watching some of the shows the little woman makes me watch throughout the week.

I thought the same thing last week, and again this week. Great contrast from Studio 60, where one of the characters prayed and the main guys looked like they'd rather be doing anything but...

Kyle Chandler is kickin ass, I'm really likin this show. Yeah, it still has a little Varsity Blues feel, but both are based on the same book. Hope this one makes it for a while.

This show has its good and bad points. I like the head coach, the backup (now starting) quarterback, and their respective families. However, everyone else in the town are jerks who seem to think only about sex, alcohol, and football. Would you want your kid to be friends with the star runningback, drunk fullback, his sloot girlfriend, or miss perfect cheerleader? Would you want to be friends with any of the adults in that town?

I guess the truth hurts when it comes to Texas and high school football. While I do like the storylines in the show, I wouldn't mind seeing the show cancelled just so that the bad Texas stereotypes don't continue to be reinforced on a weekly basis (though the ratings seem to say no one is watching anyway).

How this for authenticity - when they show coach in his office at night and his wife walks in, hanging on the wall is a cover of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine with the Dillon Panthers on the cover.

They also threw in the phrase "fixin' to" a couple of times.
Pretty good show.

I really like it. The Coach didn't look too thrilled when his wife told him she'd be working at his school....I enjoyed it and thought it was good to leave you hanging at the kickoff. I think it'll be a good season but I really don't know how they can do more than one season on it.

That's what I said about Prison Break. Actually it would be interesting to keep the coach and get new players every year (aside from the non-seniors)

The new QB is only a Soph - in TV World, that means he has 4 years of high school left.

NBC seems determined to make this show work. They'll probably move the time slot. And I know that they are going to re-run the first three episodes back to back next weekend. And, it appears they have ordered more scripts:

From the Hollywood Reporter:

More scripts for NBC's 'Lights,' Fox's 'Standoff'
Two struggling freshman drama series, NBC's "Friday Night Lights" and Fox's "Standoff," have received additional script orders.

I really hope this show makes it. It's one of those that you can invest yourself in. I was screaming at players to block during the game, I've been yelling at Tim to quit acting the fool.

Lila Garrity is freaking hot.

Tyra (Riggin's now former girlfriend/Smash's hookup) is a sloot, but she's freaking hot too.

I hope Tim finally gets his act together. I'm glad they started moving it that way at the end of the episode.

If Matt Saracen doesn't have a nervous breakdown before the end of the year, it'll be a miracle.

Coach Taylor is going to have to put Buddy Garrity in his place eventually.

I'm not sure how this new quarterback situation is going to play out, but I've got a bad feeling about it.
