Forrest Gump sucked balls.

In order to make these choices viable, you have to make the case that there were other movies that were much better than the movie that won that year.

It's why Forest Gump gets included on this list. It's a great movie, but it absolutely pales in comparison to The Shawshank Redemption. Shawshank is one of the top 3 movies ever made and it's a damn shame it did not win Best Picture (as well as Morgan Freeman not winning best actor).

Shawshank is a great movie, but not as great as Gump.

Another vote for Gladiator as most over-rated...probably ruins my street cred with the Shawshank/Tombstone crowd.

Can't believe all the hate for Shakespeare. That movie is greatness in my opinion. A lot better than Saving Private Ryan (which I like a lot).

The English Patient was hands down the worst movie I have ever seen that won the Oscar for best picture.

I liked American Beauty, at least The Green Mile didn't win that year.

Not necessarily. Why can't "worst movie to win an Oscar" just stand on its own? It's not "biggest upset" or "biggest travesty". Maybe the dungpile that was Crash was still better than other movies that year, but regardless, it's still a piece of dung that is one of the "worst movies to win an Oscar" and when you put it up against other Best Picture winners, it steams and stinks like the dungpile it really is.

I was about to post the same thing. It is a GREAT movie. Personally I like SPR better, but that's just my personality. Having said that, SIL is a wonderful, imaginative movie.

Also not getting the Forrest Gump hate. I think it's a great movie as well. It's funny how wide tastes range.

I thought Crash was a bad movie, not just the least deserving BP nominee. It was downright ****ty film, on the level of a TV movie of the week or an after-school special. All 4 of the other BP nominees were far superior, and the following movies were all much better too: The New World, Hustle & Flow, Syriana, Walk the Line, Cinderella Man, A History of Violence, and March of the Penguins, to name a few. I realize that this is just my opinion and some will disagree, but I am pretty confident that all of the aforementioned movies will be remembered and relevant in 10/20/30 years, but no one will remember Crash. That choice will be laughed it in the future.

Shakespeare in Love is up there too. SPR was too important to not win that year.

shakespere was AWFUL!! i forgot about that movie! so awful! i probably forgot about it b/c it is so damn awful. i kept waiting for it to be funny, or something & it wasn't, it was just a big pile of poo.

i didn't like forest gump either. i guess it is a good movie, but the book was so unbelievably better. one of the few movies i ever left in the middle of watching.

It's the only movie I've ever paid to see twice in the same day.

Both are average to above-average movies that elicit much more praise than they deserve. Shawshank is a good little movie. Tombstone is a good little movie. They're not the Godfather.

The first 20-30 minutes of SPR was spectacular. The rest of the movie, not so much.

Calling the vast majority of these movies bad is laughable.

After reading the majority of the comments about such great films as Gump and Crash, this board is dead to me. Crash is one of the greatest movies in my life time. I don't wish to converse with people who would call that masterpiece "crap."
