Just hear me out and don't tune out at the first sentence.

Why not have a company come in and build bonfire? The way to make it student run is to have the company hire all students (for this project)? As far as I am concerned, they can even pay them as employees and it will come out of the "bonfire fund" or some similar financial arrangement. The same goes with the acquiring of trees for bonfire. Why not hire a landscaping/logging company to do the same thing?

Thoughts?

incoming...

take it to another board where its inhabitants don't think they are the beginning, the end, and the ultimate authority on all things bonfire and you might get a different response.

BQZip, you just described Student Bonfire.

Now that the 501c3 status is done, Student Bonfire is officially a non-profit organization that uses volunteer labor to keep the Bonfire tradition alive. Procedes cover the cost of the year, go toward scholoarships, and roll over to help fund the next year (equipment, supplies, and such).

Perfect! Then why can't the University hire/sponsor them?

I truly believe that no one is going to do anything until we have a new University President...as well it should be. This is a major decision that requires major leadership

I would love nothing more than for the university to sponsor/hire SB to build Bonfire on campus.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of hoops to jump through (for SB) if they wish to move their operation on to the Texas A&M University Campus. If anyone knows a contractor that does government jobs, they know what I'm talking about.

The first step is to continue functioning like SB does, acquire some assets as a company, and get some more years of experience under their belts. A company that gets a government contract is one with plenty of tools to guarantee that a job gets done right and on time, a proven track record, and the management to surmount challenges that the company may encounter along the way.

Secondly, there needs to be some kind of presentation or mass publication that serves to convince the Administration at Texas A&M that Bonfire is once again good for the campus, able to be built safely, and affordable for the institution. This package needs to account for EVERYTHING. Where, when, how, why, etc. etc. and will probably require the help from a company that has done it before.

Thirdly, SB needs to establish the relationships with those in power to make the move possible. Find a way to get the students who work in the Regents office to come out and work on Bonfire. Stack the Former Student's Association phone bank with pro-Bonfire people. The Administration needs to know that the students want a good educaton, winning sports teams, and Bonfire.

Only then, when demand is high from current and former students, will those in charge look at Bonfire as more than a nusiance and a blurb in the paper. All of this, of course, can't happen until the legislation is finalized.

I worked there for about 2 years and in my time there I heard a number of people who wouldn't give to A&M because of Bonfire. Now whatever that means is something different to several individuals.

I can say, however, that the current staff there is flush with boat-shoe clad fratties...one of the big reasons I left. If you guys were serious about installing some pro-bonfire people there it would be as easy as going down and applying for a job since they hardly turn anybody down.

Can we get a confirmation on this? Some of us deads were asking about this during burn and didn't exactly get a clear response. Maybe make a statement on Student Bonfire on the tax implications on donating.

IRS has been contacted, the check has been cashed. Student Bonfire LLC is a 501c3.

Type in "Student Bonfire" and click on the button that says "all of these words". Select TX from the drop down and you'll get Student Bonfire.

diehard03, you probably didn't get a clear response because nothing "official" had come in the mail at that time. I received word today, however, that the status has been verified with the IRS and SB is officially non-profit. I think you are right that something on the website would be good, I'll pass it along.

Keep up the good work on SB! We'll get it back on campus, or at least sponsored by the University, eventually.

awesome. Thanks guys!

I think we are really moving in the right direction and I thank you all for your tremendous effort!

Hopefully, we can make some headway in fundraising to get towards the inevitable land purchase.

As someone who is no longer in Texas (chicago), let me know what I can do to help raise support in my area. Obviously, this is really new and nothing you guys don't already know...but I think it would benefit us to have some sort of form or something that we can hand out people.

SB is waiting to receive some paperwork in the mail that will help guide how to handle forms of that nature and other aspects of the 501c3 status. Once that paperwork is in and the details are ironed out, an official release will be posted on the website.
