Consistent with my opinion on the direction campus demographics are going, my opinion is that ASB will have difficulty pulling numbers if campus goes in the direction of all co-ed while destroying some of the traditionally bonfire conducive dorms (such as Walton and Crocker).

Assuming this were to be the case, and assuming that the majority of participants on Bonfire were to come from "non-dorm related" involvement, what do you see as the best way to get people out there and get people into bonfire?

I have my thoughts on the matter, but I'm interested in hearing some of your's as well.

And that was a joke. I honestly have no idea. We never had that problem.

Just because you never had that problem doesn't mean that the problem will never exist. If it does become a problem, I think having some ideas and an open conversation about the matter would be beneficial.

With that said and judging by your lack of meaningful response, I'll take it that you don't have any possible solutions to offer.

Reslife wanted to build an uber dorm like Jester at t.u. to house all freshmen. At least that was their goal a few years ago. Anyone know if they are still planning that?

It exists now in the majority of dorms on campus.

As much as this pains me to say I think that we would take a good look at the way OC pulls thier crews together. Most of the time they are made up of people who never participated with a dorm, at least not significantly. They do a pretty good job of getting the message out to a very large number of people.

Now with that being said, I dont know the exact methods they use, but I imagine there are a few OC guys out there that would make thier information known.

As far as coed dorms go; FHK, Neeley and Hart have always done a good job of pulling numbers. Adopting similair systems would be the only way.

To say that Neely has "always" done that is misleading in that they have only done so for a year, but true, it applies to dorms like Lechner.

What about reaching out and making an attempt to appeal to group that normally wouldn't be considered "bonfire" types - such as fraternities? Incoming on that one...but an interesting thought nonetheless.

Think of it, the Corps vs. Non-reg rivalry is very diminished in my opinion and inter-dorm rivalries aside, a hard working fraternity or two would not only supplement Burn attendence, public perception, and publicity, but do wonders for productivity (via competition). Hell, as long as the most safe environment possible is provided for all participants, I don't see how just about any group (serious about being out there) wouldn't be beneficial and/or couldn't find their niche.

The sole reason (while others may call it an excuse) I can think of for why fraternities who want to make it out but "can't" is how busy frat schedules are in the Fall. Activities are primarily late Fridays or early Sat./Sun. in direct conflict with Bonfire.

For what it's worth, in the last 3 years or so I have tried to convince members of Farmhouse (more out of friendship than any organizational affliation) to make it out to Bonfire, but no one took me up on it... much for the reasons I listed in the prior paragraph.

I am opposed to Greek fraternity life, but I say let all your anti-frat hate fuel "the Fire" and help Build the Hell more than ever.

I'm confused. You said you'd be for that idea, but then at the end you said to use the hate towards frats to build the fire.

I think I got what you were saying, the last part was a little confusing though.

I'd welcome anyone out there, but I am a little gun shy of the frats.

When I was yellowpot a large contingency of them came out and worked under me. Escorting them through Load Site and the woods was bad enough, but that could be addressed.

The main issues I had were:

1. That they did not want to be placed under any supervision other than their own. Even with absolutely no experience in the woods, every one felt that they should be left to be their own crew. They were very adamant about it to the point where once they finally realized they would be supervised, they quit coming.

2. When they did come out, they refused to **** the logs out of the woods. They would kill big trees and then leave them in the woods. Once I finally convinced them to do it, afterwards they said it was too hard and left for the day.


Having said that, I realize that some of those items and attitudes are prevalent even in some of the dorms. So, if anyone wants to try and organize a frat to come out, I wouldn't oppose it, but I would be a little wary.
