Fellow Aggies,
Bonfire was a great Aggie community building tradition, it provided leadership development opportunities, and it was a lot of fun.
As we discuss a return of bonfire, I believe we should challenge ourselves to think about making bonfire something greater.
The time and resources put into building bonfire could be re-allocated to do incredibly beneficial projects all over our region, and around the world. Community building, leadership opportunities, and fun could all be included in community projects. Labor and resource investments could be long lasting and sustainable.
Our burning desire could be represented at an event that celebrates the community projects that were either committed to or completed. Competitive elements could be introduced to make the impact even greater.
I personally think that the burning desire we should focus future Aggies on is a positive burning desire to be leaders that excel in whatever they do after Aggieland. I don't think the Aggie burning desire is really just about beating one other university in athletic events.
Current students could re-engage Alumni in the school, build relationships that could help with future job opportunities, and learn how to make a positive difference, I challenge students to think about what bonfire could be.
If former students would like to be positively engaged with our school and make a difference in local communities, then I challenge you to think about what bonfire could be given all the resources that we know went into it.
I don't think bonfire is really about cutting and burning. I think bonfire is about the Aggie spirit that can be applied to do even more than we have thought of in the past.
