Is it ok that I have a piece of wood from the 99 Bonfire?

I have a small piece that I picked up off the ground after it fell. I keep it on my desk in my office as a reminder of that day and the Ags who died. One of my coworkers thought it was weird; she's not an Aggie, but I wanted to get everyone's opinion here. Is that crazy of me to do that?

I would have done the EXACT same thing.

I still have a wood chip from the first tree I killed, though...

I have a brick from Hotard on a shelf in my room. If I stopped doing all the things that seemed weird to non-aggies, I'd live a much less fulfilling life.

I think it is awesome and it is something you can pass on to future Aggies in your family. It is a tragedy, but the only way we can honor that tragedy is to never forget and honor those who lost their lives.

From what I've gathered in my short 2 1/2 years out of Aggieland, nobody understands us. And I wouldn't have it any other way; it is what makes this university special.

Did A&M ever do anything with the logs from 1999?

They were all kept at riverside campus. Pretty sure they've completely rotted by now.

Keep it and pass it down.

Don't know why that would be weird. I have the butt of a log, some wire and part of a pot

Gosh, I wish I could remember where thy were rumored to be kept. SquareOne and I used to go park and climb fences trying to find them.

For a while they were in a hangar on Riverside...

If they are still in the hangar, I'm sure they're still just a pile of logs...

If they moved them outside, they're probably getting pretty mushy.

Last I heard they were still at riverside.

the logs are at the University Water treatment plant off 2818..just south of the George Bush intersection. They have been there for some time, I don't recall them ever being at riverside campus

What is the address of the University treatment plant of where the logs from 1999 are?

Are the logs marked as the Bonfire logs?

Out of curiosity I drove by today the place where I said the logs were...just curious to see if they were still there.
They are.
Not sure why I recalled the place being the water treatment facility, it is actually the university energy management offices.
There is no sign at the entrance.. Its a small single lane road off 2818. If traveling north on 2818 its the first possible left after the poultry center..if traveling south its the first possible right after passing the George bush intersection.
The logs are in a fenced in area to your left. They are hard to see as the area has been overtaken with grass/trees. Last time I went out there around 2003 or so that field was nothing and the logs were clearly visible..that has changed but no doubt the logs are still there.

What Fitch and Hellraiser said. Please do not go out there to take a piece of the physical remnants of one of the major tragedies suffered by this University. The logs are only kept there. Not made to be a tourist attraction. If you want to find a way to show respect or remember the twelve, take a walk through the memorial on-campus.

Why are the logs out there? I figured they would be long gone by now...or used for something else. Why are they keeping them if they are just sitting there? I would guess to investigate but I thought that was all over.

What else would they have been used for?

What would you have done with them?
Burn them? Seems disrespectful, as do any other ideas I can come up with.

This isn't exactly something that a University (or any group, for that matter), has to deal with every day. There is no rule book or a set of guidelines on how to handle the situation.

The way I see it, what was done with the logs was the right choice. It's not something you want to draw attention to, like "hey look what happened with these!", makes it seem like some sideshow tourist attraction. It's not something we want to forget about, either, had they been disposed of. Instead, they are quietly tucked away, off the beaten path. They serve as a grisly reminder of the tragedy that this University suffered. They are but a small piece by which we can remember what the families, friends, and the University as a whole lost in 1999. They are not a shrine. They are not a memorial. They are not a sight meant to be seen. They just are. Leave them be.

Just my $.02.

Considering how long the logs have been there already and seeing how they are in a fenced in area and the grass ect has overgown and basically swallowed the logs..I seriously doubt they are ever moved

I don't even remember why, but one night after a shift I took a little peice of wood off a skid. It was in my trunk, and my boyfriend and I found it over the Christmas break.. He was a crew chief, and he burned that little peice of wood for me and put it in a tiny Crown bottle so I'd have something from the Bonfire I built. I'm married to him now, and we still have it.

I have one of the few remaining pass downs (in the corps) from that night: A red ascot.

Gonna hate passing it down.

My dad picked up a small piece of wood from stack when he came out for father/son cut in 1999. He ended up using it in a knife he built for me. It is too nice for me to use, but I look at it every day and remember.
