Anyone know why people keep placing coins on the stone at the center of the bonfire memorial? I was told once by the lady in charge of maintenance of all the statues and stuff on campus that the coins, especially the pennies, stain the stone as they oxidize.

I just saw a picture of it in a youtube video and was wondering why it happens.

It happens because people don't know better and think it's something like Sully.

Are they the same people who leave coins on the Rudder statue?

A penny saved is a penny earned.

There are pennies on Rudder now? Maybe next time I go I'll put up a little sign that says to not be stupid, and pennies on Rudder/Bonfire isn't a tradition/it stains the stone.

That's what I've always thought, too. I like the sign idea, though.

At least that means they're going to the memorial

I refuse to contemplate the alternative.
