I am a current student at Bowling Green State University but have spent all but 2 years of my life around Texas A&M. I consider College Station one of my favorite places on Earth and there is no place I would rather be on a cold, November morning than tailgating in Spence Park with my family and friends.

Just recently one of my friends went to A&M for a student government conference. Knowing how much I treasure A&M, the Aggie family, and everything that the school stands for he couldn't wait to tell me about his trip.

As soon as he got back to BGSU my buddy starts talking about how he found so many of the traditions to be bizarre. He couldn't wrap his mind around why the Aggie ring is so valuable to an Aggie. He made the mistake of trying to challenge one of the Yell Leaders to a yelling match. But, the one tradition that really stood out to him and amazed him was Bonfire. He described to me just how in awe he was of just looking at pictures, amazed at the size and magnitude. One of the questions that he asked me was about how one tradition can bring people so close together. I began to think upon this question and look back on what I have observed in the first 18 years of my life with Texas A&M. Looking back on these I began to attempt to describe something that I have only observed but never been involved with. And as I did this my friend was amazed just by how large of an impact is noticeable by someone who is not involved with Bonfire.

For a few weeks after his trip my friend would continuously brainstorm ideas to create such a bond on our campus. I eventually had to stop him because something like the Aggie spirit and the bond of the Aggie family is not something that can be forced but only can be realized after it has begun. I want to thank Texas A&M and Aggies all around the world for sharing something that can easily be taken for granted with someone who may not understand the bonds of Texas A&M but can definitely see them and appreciate them.

Brilliant post.

Well said. If he's still trying, tell him to start knocking on doors and inviting strangers to dinner.

It's the little acts of reaching out that, over time, culminate in grandiose displays built from bonds of common friendship.
