The Yell Practice needs to just happen. I want the Dorms to create new traditions to go along with this yell but that will be up to the dorms to do. This first time, the dorms may not do much, but in the future they will all begin to create individual traditions to go with the "t.u. Yell Practice," just like they did with Bonfire. You cant force tradition on them...and if they make it on their own...they will embrace it more.

The best thing to do would be for people in charge of this event to speak to each group of dorm leaders (most of them on North Side still have pots) and then let them take charge of their own dorm with some of the great ideas that you may give them. If you give them some ideas, they will either use your idea or they will adapt it for themself.

People could march with axe handles behind the band.

Each Dorm could dress and march behind with a small Dorm log. Logs carved with the dorm names. Logs could be displayed outside the Stadium (in a safe manner) for the game.

Or one log for the school (dorms rotate carrying the log)and display the log in front of the 12th man statue of the Bonfire Memorial.

awesome idea. i still got an axe handle from old army days, and i still got my pot from freshman year (i'm '03 old army, whoop!).

quote:
Do dorms still have real rivalries? Grode yells? Is the Northside-Southside thing still going? It always made things more fun when you'd hear these crazy goings-on every fall.

nope, they are trying to cut out anything that makes this university unique. we get written up for doing our dorm yell in public, and dorm no longer do dorm spirit banners b/c there is too much red tape to get it hung up (ie, must be completely PC, not offend anyone in anyway, make no mention of stereotypes even if the other team's mascot is an indian, not mention bonfire, etc).

actually, i wrote a letter to the batt concerning this issue, but it never got printed, so i'll put it here:

-----------------------------------------------
Mail Call – September 2, 2003

As a 5th year senior I have frequently heard that the Administration is trying to turn our great school into “just another” college. This week, I learned that our dorm is no longer allowed to perform our dorm yell in public, due to profanity contained within it, and will be “written up” if we do. One RA also indicated to me that I shouldn’t wear my Pot from freshman year or my “PRO BONFIRE” shirt since this was a touchy subject now. As I was lying in bed thinking about this, I finally realized what Bonfire and Dorm Yells are about and what they did for this school.
These Old Army Traditions aren’t about fire, hazing, and profanity. They are about including new people, about making friends, about teamwork and working towards a common goal. Bonfire allowed 8 – 16 hrs of weekend activity, time for Aggies to “break the ice” and truly get to know each other. Events such as Gig ‘Em week and Farmer’s Fight Festival week only serve up one-time, 2 hour functions, a time where people learn the names, majors, and hometowns of fellow Aggies only to go their separate ways and forget the people they just met.
Without more substantial unifying events such as Bonfire, Dorm Yells, and All U-Night (which the University FAILED to promote this year), incoming Aggies have little else to turn to brotherhood other than underage drinking parties, the Greek Life, the Corps, and Fish Camp counseling. Sadly, it seems these are some of the only events left where new Aggies spend enough quality time together to make lasting friendships.
Although in the past I have refuted the claim that A&M is becoming “just another university”, this year I realized I have only been fooling myself.

You just might be the guy that needs to fire up your dorm for something like this....you seem like a guy "in the know."

If I may add a little something to a great idea.....

Once we decide on what field to end the march, since we have the torches, how about having a center pole with the tu outhouse at the top and light that puppy on fire??? I know it is not Bonfire, but at least we would have the tu outhouse in flames like we used to???
The Center Pole does not have to be 75' high or anything like that, maybe just about 30' or so with the out house at the top???

What do you all think??

Please - just do something!

We had "spontaneous" yell practices once a year when the band and yell leaders would walk around campus and pick up students to do the yell practice in front of Cain Hall. It was usually before an important game and it was fun!

I can't believe dorm life has gone to hell. Do the yells, keep doing all U night, post banners, make a stink that these things aren't happening. Gather as a group infront of the Board of Regents and protest about the PC in the Residence Hall staff. Dorm life was great and I made the best of friends. It was a place that kids could get involved that didn't like the Greek or Corps scene. You'll only get out of it what you put into it.

The yell was - Northside close knit, Southside eat sh**.

i could read stories about the old army days all day long. Thats a Texas A&M that i'll never know

It often seems that our school is headed towards just being another college, only we seem to have a knack holding on to traditions. I love the ones we have, but it seems like without bonfire, we're gonna continue to lose more.

also, it was stated somewhere earlier, but i have a feeling whatever bonfire replacement activities take place, now or in the future, will be just a memorial to the past, not a hard core display of aggie spirit. in some ways i'd rather not see us try to replace things we can't have back in fear of just going through motions and ruining thier legacy.

that said, this idea could be really cool if we could get a lot of support. but with the way campus works lately, i'm not so sure we could. pardon the cynicism-- just gettin my thoughts out there

Wendy, do not worry Northside is still the same. We grode in grode holes out in the quad, we do our grode yell everywhere we go, and no matter how much Walton, Moses and Moore hate each other, at the end of a football game we all get together and do the Northside Yell and even a beat the hell outta fish camp every once in a while. As i'm sitting in my room now i look up above my mirror and mine and my roomates pots are hangin on the nails that were nailed in there prolly 10 years ago. While southside has totally lost the true Spirit its alive over here. Oh yea Moses did the No Frats shirts last year, on the back they say RAB's We Pay For Beer Not Friends. Ill finish this later, i got class

YEAH! Talk smack about other Aggies!!! Thats what made this University great!

That is the reason there was so much disdain for the hard-core northside guys. The corps never made up yells to make fun of the dorms. The fraternities never made shirts that were anti-dorm. I didn't understand that when I was in school and I still don't understand it now.

Take pride in being an Aggie, but don't appoint yourself to personally yell/harrass etc all those who aren't as "redass" as you.

Bonfire was the greatest tradition of all and the void it left behind is huge. But, some (NOT ALL) of the radical dorm practices are not a big loss IMO.

I would support this and I would drive up from Houston for it. Like the idea. Also like the idea of making an away tu game a really big send off for the team. Don't really care for the flashlight idea, but keep working on it. I think you've got something here; something maybe the Administration would get behind and support.

Too bad you'd miss out on what Bonfire was all about.

Besides location what would be the difference between this idea and any other yell practice? Get the team on a stage, whoop-dee doo. The rest is already covered in any "normal" yell practice.

How about moving the game to Thursday night where it belongs, that would shorten up the week.

Get something moving Ags, and don't mad when it evolves.

Its kind of hard for me to have a voice from down here in Galvatraz, but the Redass'd Ags I hang with will be there for sure.

These are great ideas. Something must be done to help fill the void left by the absence of Aggie Bonfire. Yell practice at Kyle in 2001 left thousands of Aggies in the stands at around 9pm with an empty feeling at the end. Get these ideas to the current students so they can be excited about creating a new tradition. They should be involved as much as the rest of us because I’m sure that most of them feel bad enough not being able to enjoy building Bonfire. One more thing, the burning of Bonfire not only united Ags from across the country, but the event benefited the BCS community in so many ways including the high revenue brought by visitors. IMO, this is a challenge that involves both current and former students. If you can prove this will benefit the community, the University has no choice but to accept it.

any fire on campus is considered arson by the university... I hear that there is a new rule floating around that restricts RA's and such from participating in off campus Bonfire's (i'm not sure about that). The admin knows if it can keep the Bonfire gone long enough, the students will forget. That is why I and others are working so hard to continue to keep the tradition alive off campus.

I like the idea of walking through campus with flash lights, coleman lanterns, whatever.
I think us out of town Ags that have some extra cash should print hundreds of Pro Bonfire, Pro Spirit, Pro Dorm type flyers and just litter N. Gate, Campus, and town with them. A get the message out there type of thing. Put banners on our cars, etc.
If the admin is trying to stop this on campus, well screw them! This is what college and especially Texas A&M is about. SPIRIT. and if that means bad mouthing the other dorms, a little profanity, banners and signs hanging out of windows, then so be it.
Also, while everyone else is marching through campus, a few dozen guys with pickups should come dump wood scraps, pallets, etc on the field of the final destination, and light it up when the FTAB, Yell Leaders, and students arrive. A t.u. frat house would be nice to burn.

Just keep in mind...this is not a finger to the admin, it is not to get the old feeling of Bonfire back, it is not really to even start a "New" tradition.

It is that just because Bonfire is not there and wont burn, doesnt mean that we cant still do all the other things that were associated with the night that Bonfire burned.

As for the flashlight idea. We need to take a look at what OU does with their torch parade, and make sure that it is not some cheesy copy of what they are doing.

The original intent here was to just do all the things we did on Bonfire Night. Not to start doing new stuff. But if new stuff starts on its own....well....then so be it, I guess.

For those of you that were here when Bonfire burned.....

Even if you hadnt helped build Bonfire, I am sure you remember all the excitement and electricity that was building in the air. Then the night came and it was pure craziness and spirit. A huge feeling of pride came over you. You watched it burn, you participated in Yell Practice, you waited till it fell. Once it fell you hit the parties...man, it was a rivalry game and it was time to celebrate being an Aggie. It was a great day/week. After the parties, and much fun was had, I usually found myself back out at the Bonfire site after all the crowds had left. I watched it burn till the sun came up.

Flash to present day....the tu game is just another football game. Not much of a rivalry feel to it (although it is still better than the rest) and Yell Practice is just another Yell Practice. We gotta get the excitement and feeling back. This could build some serious excitement. And if nothing else, it cant hurt and it would be a helluva good time.

As every tradition has emerged, it must come from the students. If they want to do something along these lines, then they must organize it and get it going. Heck, if 5 students can pull off RWB-out, then imagine what else they could do.

I'm envisioning this (if it sounds stupid, so be it--it's not Bonfire so of course it might sound stupid): When the Yell Leaders and the Band get to the Polo Fields, then every person in the entire crowd lights one of those long 12-inch candles and places it on the ground to burn during yell practice. The crowd will of course be gathered around the burning candles for yell.

They could even spread pea gravel or sand several inches deep in order for the candles to remain upright and not cause a grass fire. Then for easy cleanup, they just need to come in the next day with a front-end loader and scrape up the waxy sand or gravel.

My thoughts:

1. This needs to happen
2. Nov 18th is their day
3. It makes old folks like me pretty red when I hear stuff like "tu is just another game" It wasn't that way when I first got to college and should never be.
4. All through A&M's history - it was the STUDENTS, not the administration, not the Old Ags, but the STUDENTS who have made the most happen. This is YOUR chance to leave your impact on Texas A&M's history.
5. Don't accept NO for the first answer.
6. Sounds like Aggie99 is the guy to contact to help put this together. Aggie99 - what do you need me to do?

the physical Bonfire might not burn this year, but its time to reignite the burning desired to beat the ever living hell out of TU.

Has anyone considered the idea of twelve (12) mini fires configured in a large circle lighted by torches carried at the ahead of the FTAB followed by student body, yell practice, inspirational / memorial remembrances, solemn dedication to stuff our opponents in memory of the one that was "more than a game". Maybe not every year, but every home TG. There are all kinds of things---DON't LET IT GET GO.

The idea of any kind of fires burning is going to be a hard sell. So this is going to be a "baby step" kind of ordeal.

As for students...you are right. This needs to come from the students. I have a group of buddies who are still in school and are going to head this up. Hopefully you will be getting more info very soon (within the next week). As far as others helping....stay tuned....if we need Ol Ags help...my fellas wont hesitate to ask.

I too am trying to stay back from this project even though I want it to happen. I am trying to let my friends, who are current students, take care of this one.

Great Idea!! We need something to bring back the Spirit and Atmosphere that Bonfire provided.....and a Yell Practice before the tu game will just not cut it.

I am very sure Bill Byrne and Coach Fran would be very supportive of something like this!

Since I've been out of the loop for a while, please bear with me.

Has it ever been proposed to go Real Old Army with Bonfire..ie burning a trash pile? I'm just curious as to what the justifications are of not going back to how it was done in the very beginning so that we can slowly progress into the type of Bonfire that we want to bring back.

Anyone remember "Bonfire Unity Rally." It happened the night Bowen said bonfire would not burn in 2002. I remember making a lot of posters and flyers that day... I had considered keeping it going each year until bonfire was back on campus, but I moved off campus... the next day i helped begin work at the bonfire rally (at rudder fountain) to form what is known today as bonfire coalition.

Aggies unite in response to bonfire decision
By Melissa Sullivan
2/4/02

Hundreds of Aggies united on Monday to show their Aggie spirit by marching across campus to President Bowen's home to hold a yell practice on his front lawn in response to his decision to not let bonfire burn this fall. The march started in front of Walton Hall and continued through campus with the large crowd singing the War Hymn and The Spirit of Aggieland as more Aggies joined in along the way.

The yell concluded with a few words from President Bowen, who said he knows what it's like because he worked on a bonfire and wears his Aggie ring proudly. Bowen, however, compared the rally to a similar one held in the past when students rallied when women were allowed to attend the university.

He concluded by thanking the crowd for showing unity in a non-violent way and said he hopes one day we can understand why he made the choice he did.

The tu Yell Practice is set for 8pm, Turkey Day. The Yell Leaders & FTAB will have an extensive march all over campus before going to Kyle Field for yell. This is all that has been set so far. The dorms need to really be encouraged to participate in this as well, grodes, pots, and all.
