I am suprised this hasn't been talked about more, stay with me and you'll see what this has to do with Bonfire. So we were supposed to have Elephant Walk the day after Monday last week. It was raining pretty nicely, but it had been announced, we would step off rain or shine. Well the administration decided it was too dangerous to walk around in the storm. So they canceled Elephant Walk. You can still walk to class, but Elephant Walk was just too dangerous. They said it would be held in January instead.

Here is the great part. A good number of the Fightin' Texas Aggie class of 2005 decided the admin does not say when our traditions start and stop. So we had our Elephant Walk anyway. Through the rain we walked a bit, then came to fish pond and dove in and we had an nice little impromptu yell practice. It felt good that we did it anyway because it was the right way, like Bonfire. It is not a tradition because we are told it is. It is a tradition because Aggies do it, like generations before. It was some bad bull from the admin, but like Saturday and months before it was the best bull I had the priviledge of being involved in these last 4 years. Just thought y'all would like to know.

Good Bull Class of 2005!!! Rest in Peace!

"It is not a tradition because we are told it is. It is a tradition because Aggies do it, like generations before."

That quote just about says it all.

Wait, wait, wait Godot - that statement completely flies in the face of what one ResLife adviser told a friend of mine (yes I was there) at Walton at Elephant Walk last year...

"I don't care that I didn't go to A&M, I know more about A&M and the traditions than you do."

This individual also seemed bumfuzzled that "Most of you haven't lived here for years..."

On a side note, the weather IMO was much worse for Elephant Walk for the class of '03 (Nov '02) - it was much cooler and rainy all day - and they didn't cancel it.

All of this ties into what I feel is the most compelling argument for students to continue passing down the tradition of Bonfire despite the administration's stern edicts to not do so...They don't even trust college seniors to walk across campus in the rain. There's no reason to think they'll EVER trust college freshmen to chop down a tree or stack a log up?

Maybe we're not so cynical after all.

I quite personally loved how e-walk was moved to rudder and we passed the rotting carcasses of the dead elephants on the way... MAKE WAY FOR THE DEAD ELEPHANTS! SHOOT IT! RELOAD!

much fun

And I find it funny that many of you 05 guys claim to not be dead when you yourself walked. Just because the admin says they've post-poned it and you did it any way does not give you a free resurrection card.

Course, it will be nice for 06 to reload to shoot you again.

what yall don't know is that it was moved from the traditional day (the week before the last HOME football game) before it was moved to january...so before you pat yourself on the back for being redass why dont you read up on your traditions a little bit

Amen! ALL of my dead crew walked, and when I met them at Sully later on and said elephant, they all made me push! It was good bull since there was a campus tour right there near us, but still. YOU ARE DEAD.

B-1, yessir, I did know this. It was pointed out to me by a D-2 pisshead. So, you can shut it. Are you back in town? I am trying to see who is... I am going to write my paper and if I finish, I am going to go to the chicken tonight if you'd like to go (okay, you too disney ).

Traditionally elephant walk was before the last home game but for consistency's sake, they moved it to the week of bonfire. It's been that way for a while apparently? I don't know. Class councils sucks.

This reminds me, I asked about that at the same time I asked why we don't have boot line anymore... Apparently the athletic dept won't allow it on the field?

I'm in Florida where it's raining. And I miss College Station already.

But I'm making some salsa and black bean tacos to warm things up a bit! Stupid rain. Stupid winter.

I thought it would take longer than this to miss Bonfire.

Ok to clear some things up:

Elephant Walk happens before the last SCHEDULED game of the year, not home game. This is the last time that the senior class can be part of the 12th man. It just happened that the tu game and Bonfire was that week as well.

Also, the reason it was cancelled was not because of a little rain. It was b/c of the thunderstorm warning and the LIGHTNING. As cool as you feel for being a rebel now, I doubt you would have felt that way had one of those cool bass players been struck. And yet another one of our traditions that the admin would feel the need to take over.....

And for the record, ’05 IS DEAD. Last game = dead. The walk in January is for show.

SuperAg, are you on class councils? It's cool if you were but that is what I was told by someone on 06 class council... you know, who works with the admin to schedule it?

And I seriously doubt that the hundreds of dead zips that came out would have just turned around and gone home. If they were prepared enough to come out given the circumstances, they were ready to walk despite whatever the admin says - good decision or not. They did and therefore they are dead, regardless of any rescheduling. And as I said, the rescheduled walk is fine w/ me because it gives 06 the chance to reload and shoot 05 again. This time I will be behind a tree waiting.

And YellAgs, I am sure BrownEyes was doing them right. You were probably wrong yet again. Haven't you learned that a woman is ALWAYS right?

You haven't been lookin' hard enough, Smitty.

It's true that they did more than me. And it's true that I suck at pushing.

Sometime next year I'm gonna strap a couple of 10lb bowling balls to a guy's chest and make him do pushups so he can know what it feels like. Stupid boys.

So where did you get your information? I know the campo that we learned as a fish said that it was the last HOME game and as a member of Traditions Council we taught that it was before the last HOME football game...so where is class council getting this stuff

They are pulling it out thier arse.

IMHO people on class council are resume-padders and don't really want to hardcore put out to preserve tradition.

People on class councils probably enter with the greatest of intentions, but are quickly confronted with the reality that they represent the administration TO the student body - not the other way around.

The point is not to rebel against the admin. They are doing their jobs, and it is our privilege to carry out the traditions we hold dear. They should not be held like an annual carnival, but like a rite. We should be proud that students are starting to realize that again.

If they were so concerned ask them to leave their sousaphones behind. Don't gather the class and then change your mind. I don't want to be a part of anything that is just for show.

Smitty, you always win, after all you were in the first elepant walk.

Ok let me try this again,

While traditions council and the Corp teach one thing, it is Class Councils who actually puts this event on. Let’s try to get this straightened out: E-walk signifies the senior class dieing and not being useful anymore to the 12th man. This happens before the last scheduled game, b/c they can still be part of the 12th man @ an away game. This also happened to be the day before Bonfire. When the class of '26 initially did this, they did it AFTER EVERY HOME game their fish year to break a football jinx. So I guess we must not be following tradition b/c we don't do that either.

TAMUGodot - While you feel that E-walk should not be some sort of carnival, it's mainly been that way in the past. There are always elephants out there, barbeque, and sometimes even large organized parties @ a bar that night. That’s just reality. And for your take on the admin, it would be just dumb on their part to allow a large group to gather with the weather conditions as they were. Don't you think they are tired of being on the wrong side of these situations? Guess they had to step in sometime.

NSG06 - I doubt you know the first thing about Class Councils, and I don't remember you being the authority on traditions either. For your information, CC was part of a group called "Team Traditions" which included two other important TRADITIONAL entities, Bonfire and the Yell Leaders. Not that useless, huh?

first of all i just want to say ALL HAIL TO CLASS COUNCIL FOR WITHOUT THEM WE WOULD BE LOST!!!!"

From my Traditions Council notebook:

"Started by the Class of '26 their freshman year in 1922 in an attempt to end the "jinx" of a not-so-successful footbal season. Before the game that weekend, two freshman playing a piccolo and a bass horn began playing a funeral march while they slowly walked around campus. Other fish joined them forming a single line. This ritual occurred several times during their freshman year, but not again until they were seniors.

Before the game against t.u., the seniors of the class of '26 began to recreate their walk around campus. The underclassman could only watch since they had never been a part of or seen this ceremony. Some noted that the seniors looked like old elephants loooking for a place to die, thus the tradition of Elephant Walk was born.

Today, Elephant Walk occurs the week before we play our last home game. Seniors wander through campus holding yell pratices at special places like the Academic building, YMCA Building, Fish Pond, and Kyle Field. The senior redpots and yell leaders lead them around. It gives the seniors a chance to relive cherished memories at A&M and to commemorate that they are about to move on and no longer be a member of the 12th Man.

In the 1980's, the juniors began to get rowdy and try to interupt Elephant Walk so E-Walk was created to give the juniors something to do. They walk the same path as the seniors, only backwards so that the two classes are kept apart. Then, the juniors end at Kyle field where they have a motivational speech about how to lead the campus as seniors the next year.

EXTRAS:

It is a solemn occasion but also a time for camaderie with your class.
Aggies used to shake hands with professors and touch their old buildings.

I'm glad someone finally realizes that. But seriously, my point was not for that response. It was mainly aimed at the ones who said CC sucked and did nothing for tradition.

Regarding what your TC thing says, if you look at the dates posted earlier you will see that E-walk was hardly held before the last home game. Much like the '26 seniors, we do it before the t.u game also which ends up being our last game of the year now. Of course over the years, football schedules have changed as well as the date of the walk.

Is it okay if this ends now? A tradition "pissing" contest is pointless.
