I find the font used ont he shirt is in bad taste, but as for the text itself, it's an old Bonfire saying, and I'm not sure I see the bad taste you're referring to.

if we are so good at it and qualified to build one, why did people get killed?

Umm... Student Bonfire != old Bonfire.

They have an engineer now. "easy" refers to effort and labor, not complexity.
Oveta

Umm...then why use an "old bonfire saying"?

Well, we started saying it long before the tragedy. As for using it for the current Bonfire . . . . Well, I think it is still true that if it were easy anyone could build one.

I look at it this way, the current Bonfire is, perhaps, more difficult than the old one. You now have to deal with an openly hostile on-campus atmosphere, you have to be 1000 time more careful than we did (*edit* Not that this is a good thing. I can't tell you how much I wish we had been more careful. *edit*)and it is off campus, making it altogether less convenient than it was for us. I would say that the modern student Bonfire has earned it even more than the on-campus one did.

i dont think that they were trying to be insensitive (because that was an old saying), but maybe didnt realize that it could be taken the wrong way, particularly by people outside of the bonfire community

btw kip, i played dominoes the other night with homer and stroebel

I can completely see the point that Oveta is making. That's fine and dandy that "If it was easy..." is an old Bonfire saying (I actually think that I used to have a shirt saying that), but in light of 11-18-99 the meaning could definately be misconstrued. The fact of the matter is that 95% of the current students and 99.9% of the population in general that would see that shirt would understand that "It's an old Bonfire saying".

How did you manage that? You in Austin? Please tell them I said, "hi."

Oh, and I know I asked this before, but . . . Who are you?

I'm confused.

I can tell you that it was never meant to offend...

just being that we do have obstacles that we faced and continue to face made it fit.

As I have said before, the reason why I am involved is to perpetuate a tradition that those that passed away were passionate about. I personally would never want to offend someone else that felt the same way...

There was an idea to use would instead of could, but I don't know whatever happend to that. The Greens started being run completely different in November, thankfully.

If you have any specific comments or concerns, why don't you try and contact us? I can assure you that we are more than willing to listen intently to you... in fact, we value the advice of old ags. Those aren't mere words.

I wore the shirt to the Cotton Bowl and on the way in some Tennesee guy behind me was laughing saying "Where'd you get that shirt? Oh man, that's great! I want to get that for my dad." I didn't press the issue to find out what he meant, because it didn't sound positive and I didn't want to get in a fight. It could have been anything, but I was imagining from the standpoint of a guy from Tenn. that likely doesn't know anything about bonfire post-collape, that he was interpreting it in a way that was not intended.

Its the same motto as the minnesota wrestling team, if it was easy anybody would do it, could say, If it was easy, then it'd be called a frat.

My first thought upon reading that shirt was "so they're saying it's not easy, and everyone can't do it, especially me because it fell while I worked on it." Immediately afterward though I remembered having heard that before somewhere and the later posts claimed it as a saying from old Bonfire days. Then I read further and realized you guys are just trying to bring back some of the old which is fine by me, good job. Point is (and maybe I'm just being defensive) but it almost sounded accusatory to those of us who worked on it in '99, and couldn't do it. Anyway, just my $0.02 and my guess is the shirts are already printed anyway so it prolly doesn't matter.

thank you for that - i know they were not trying to offend, i just thought the shirts could be misinterpreted and wondered if anyone else saw it that way

kip - you prolly dont remember me, but we know a lot of the same people and your name would always come up in conversation (even now) - i cut with Dunn and Lechner in 93, then came back to school in 95 and cut with just about everybody (dunn, law, hart, moses, aston, schuhmacher, moore, etc)

Hmmm. I'm going to have to think about this. In '93 I was relatively sober (well . . . compared to the previous two years), not yet working full time and still on campus.

Hopefully those people are saying nice things about me, but I doubt it.

I didn't think of it as accusatory or anything like that when I first saw it, but after reading this thread and thinking about it...it probably would have been best had that quote not been brought back.

Kinda a "no harm, no foul" thing, but I wouldn't do it again.
