I took an out of town friend on a tour of campus this morning which included the Bonfire Memorial. I hadn't been in 2 years. There were coins on the center pole cover. I know why they are left on Sully. Can someone enlighten me as to why they are left at the memorial?

That's something new.

The fish have been leaving pennies on the statue of Rudder. I don't think they're all there.

Harry Potter just like the Smurfs and many other things are simply witchcraft made G Rated on the outside but underlying it is still witchcraft and is against the will of God.

my roommate was on traditions council last year and he said that they can't figure out why people are leaving coins on the centerpole...

It needs to stop. It's a great way to ruin it.

Sully's tutoring schedule must've been booked solid.

...and giving pennies to Rudder didn't help their grade any...

I wonder where they'll pop up next...Gil?

I prefer to drop them directly on professor's desks or taping them to the back of the exam.

Though it's usually more than a penny.

On one of my campus visits this semester, I saw a little boy walk by the Rudder statue and ask his dad if he could put a penny on it. His dad agreed. I probably should have said something, but I was too stunned.

Hey, the Pennies on Sully thing was just invented a few years ago, why are you ragging on the folks inventing Rudder and Bonfire traditions?

I know no one was putting pennies on Sully when I was in school. The first I personally saw it was in 2006 or so when I accompanied my daughter on a campus tour. The guide had some big B.S. story about how it dated back to Sully tutoring cadets for a penny and/or offering them a penny for their thoughts.

I don't mind the tradition, traditions come and go all the time. What I can't stand is the implication that every new tradition has roots stretching back to October 4, 1876.

Pennies on Sulley dates back to at least the 90's...

I have pictures of them in intricate stacks...especially in 1999 and 2002.

When I was in elementary (80's) the tours we took would mention pennies on Sulley...and also how he wasn't polished because the continuous corrosion was eating him away...

...I wonder what ever happened to that...

So if you heard of pennies being put on Sully in the 80's, why would you say it dates back at least to the 90's and not the 80's?

no visual proof.

No visual proof here either, but my folks both went here in the late 70's: they sure knew about it then...

I was putting pennies on Sully back in 1990.

So no one has any idea on why people are leaving coins at Bonfire Memorial?

If there's a good reason for it, great! But I don't know what that reason would be.

I've heard the facilities people are looking into a way to keep people from placing items (coins, etc,) on the centerpole marker due to the damage it is causing.

Change the centerpole stamp to a short stand that has a ~50 angle on top with a copy of the current bronze plate.

...coins won't stay on top, it will be a little more visible, and people that can't bend down will be able to reach it.

A simple batt article could virtually eliminate the problem.

Yes, that's a real quote. No, I didn't say it.

It's a Jewish tradition to leave a rock on the headstone when one visits a grave. Example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/elmada/213113670/ I see it quite a bit when visiting cemetaries.

Perhaps leaving coins at the bonfire memorial is an off-shoot of that?

I think it's just a way of saying "Someone was here", or that the deceased was respected enough for someone to stop by and pay their respects.

whatever the reason it needs to be stopped; My grandmother and her friend came to town last week and I showed them around. Some idiot had put a bunch of coins on there in the shape of a smily face.

The coins will corrode the stone at the memorial.

THe sentiment is nice, I'm sure, but damaging a memorial is a bad thing. If they want to leave something, maybe a donation box nearby would alleviate the problem

you can see where the coins are damaging it...

and from what ive heard, when it was build people werent expected to ever step on the grass... they thought it would be considered sacred and nobody would touch it... but the first thing people did was go to centerpole...

At least they aren't polishing it. I remember Margaret Rudder asking people NOT to polish it, that it was supposed to have that patina.
