I always start strong in Lent but dwindle out as the weeks of Lent pass. My wife tells me this is because I start listening to my "B**** voice"!?! That's not very nice,... but she's not wrong. I'm trying the Hallow app for the first time this Lent to see if it helps keep me on track. The first reflection today was a verse I have likely heard a 100 times but blew past it. It hard today as I currently find myself in a similar situation as that father with his son:

23 And Jesus said to him, "'If You can?' All things are possible to him who believes." 24 Immediately the boy's father cried out and said, "I do believe; help my unbelief." -Mark 9:23-24

My hope and prayer for each of you is that this time of preparation for Christs' resurrection has a positive impact on you, your prayer life, and most importantly your relationship with Christ. Please pray for me that I can make it this year though 40 days in the desert without succumbing to my "b**** voice".

I love Lent. I like to reflect on the goodness of God and all He has done for me. Instead of giving up something, an old pastor friend of mine sends me a calendar of intentional things to do.

Find it to be much more fulfilling.

May God bless each of you as you seek Him. May He give you peace. May He shower you with blessings.

Shalom.

And I might add if I felt like I needed to give something up to get closer to the Lord I would have already done it.

Definitely not opposed to lent, but have not dabbled much in it myself. Curious if anyone actually practices the more historical/traditional way? Please correct me if I have any of the history wrong below. Overall there seems to be a general progressive movement when you objectively analyze the history of it over the centuries.
Quote:

Historians generally agree that the 40-day period before Easter, known as Lent, emerged shortly following the Council of Nicea in 325 AD. Earliest observances of Lent seem to have focused particularly on the practice of fasting. Council records suggest that the fast applied at first mainly to new converts as a period of repentance and reflection before baptism at Easter. In any case, Lent quickly became a general practice churchwide. The actual 40-day period varied region-to-region, even church-to-church; some including weekends, some not; some fasting Sundays, others not. But in every case, the fast was strict: one meal a day after 3 PM with no meat, fish, or dairy. It was Pope Gregory I (590 - 604) who finally regularized the period of the fast churchwide, to begin on a Wednesday 46 days before Easter with a ceremony of ash, and not to include Sundays, which were perennial days of celebration.
Quote:

Following Nicea, Lenten practices remained essentially unchanged for centuries. However, by the 800s, the strictness of the fast began to relax. By the 1400s, Christians had begun eating the one meal earlier in the day, and later began to add a smaller meal to keep up their strength for work. Eventually, the one-meal restriction was lifted altogether, and new practices emerged, like the idea of giving up some luxury or need as a personal sacrifice for the season. Over time, "giving something up" became the centerpiece of Lent.
Quote:

But over the years, Lent has become less strict in almost every western tradition. In the Catholic Church, for example, the number of obligatory fasting days decreased incrementally from six days a week to three, and then eventually, to just two in the whole season of Lent: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The well known "fish on Friday" tradition began in the United States in 1966 when the Pope affirmed the abstinence from "flesh" on Fridays. In every tradition, however, the act of "giving something up" has remained strong. For all of these changes, though, the tradition of Lent is still largely recognizable to what it was nearly 2,000 years ago.

Depends on the tradition. Our Anglican parish does a communal fast from meats, sweets, and alcohol except feast days (most weeks are six days of fasting). As with most fasts, it has to be appropriate to the practitioner. My kids and wife need meat or they get anemic so they're not as strict.

Our family adds additional practices depending on the person. My wife is fasting today. I change my lunches to be very simple so that I have 45 minutes to pray through our church prayer list and those from my men's group.

I like to fast periodically for specific people going through things. Makes me think of them and lift them up all day long.

As I've been inquiring into Orthodoxy (Antiochian), I'm following their approach. No meat, dairy, eggs, fish, olive oil, or wine Monday-Friday. No meat, dairy, eggs, or fish on the weekends.

Using this calendar (not my specific church's). https://www.orthodoxarkansas.com/fasting-calendar-2025/)

Also cutting off from Twitter, but that may stay permanent

Something close to this

No feast days

Partly for penance, but also for clarity of mind and concentration, understanding of God's will, and growth in Christ

It will be a positive experience, not one of pain or want

A celebration

Hopefully everyone is remaining steadfast in their Lenten journeys. I've been staying on track so for. Wanted to share Bishop Robert Barron's homily for the weekend. It is a great reflection on the temptations of Christ (Luke 4). It's an important message for all of us Christians, Catholic and Protestant, who are observing Lent.

Giving up booze used to be hard for me, but somehow, it's not so hard during Lent...

We go to all the Aggie baseball games and I gave up drinking wine at Aggie Sunday baseball games. The way our team has been playing has made this very tough.

Yep, Orthodox do. Most can't or don't do the full version. That is their business.

I have Russian friends. 100% hardcore.

Totally Vegan all week. No oil either.

Very plain food. Nothing nice and in small quantity.

Oil on weekends.

Whole family. Even the little kids. Those guys are hardcore.

Not sure on this timeline. An article I saw indicated fish on Friday's several years before 1966, which culminated in the creation of McD's filet-o-fish.

It isn't that difficult once you get used to it. Hardest part is figuring out what to make, since your usual rotation is completely out the window.
