One of the things about Catholicism that I really like is that it offers daily Holy Communion. In Acts 2:46 it says that the early church met daily (in their homes, not the synagogues) for the breaking of the bread (a euphemism for Communion). And Jesus said to give us this day our daily bread, a reference to the daily supernatural bread from heaven (manna) which has now become the Eucharist...Being one with Jesus, both physically and spiritually, in Communion is the highest state of being that one can possibly attain, and having the opportunity to achieve that every day is a true blessing.

The word "daily" (epiousios) is unique to the New Testament and can be understood in several ways 2 :

Temporal Sense: It can be a pedagogical repetition of "this day," confirming trust without reservation.

Qualitative Sense: It signifies what is necessary for life and broadly every good thing sufficient for subsistence.

Literal Sense: Taken as "super-essential" (epi-ousios), it directly refers to the Bread of Life, the Body of Christ

Here's what Google's AI says about the translation of the Greek word "epiousios":

Quote:

""Epiousios" () is a Greek word found in the Lord's Prayer, specifically in Matthew 6:11 and Luke 11:3, and it's usually translated as "daily." However, its exact meaning is debated, as it's a hapax legomenon, meaning it only appears in these two biblical passages and nowhere else in extant ancient Greek literature.

Here's a breakdown of the term and its interpretations:
Meaning and Derivation:
  • "Daily":
This is the most common translation, aligning with the context of the Lord's Prayer, which asks for "our daily bread".
  • "Supersubstantial" or "Superessential":
This interpretation stems from the word's etymology: "epi" (meaning "upon" or "over") and "ousia" (meaning "substance" or "being").
  • "Of the coming day":
Some scholars suggest it refers to bread for the next day or the coming day.
  • "Necessary for existence":
This interpretation links it to the idea of bread needed for sustenance and survival.
  • "Special" or "Very Special Bread":
Some YouTube videos on the topic suggest it could refer to a special kind of bread, possibly connected to the Eucharist (communion bread).
  • "That belongs to it":
Some interpretations suggest it might refer to bread that is owed to God or belongs to God.
Interpretations and Theological Significance:

  • Catholic Tradition:
Catholic theologians often interpret "epiousios" as "supersubstantial," linking it to the Eucharist and the bread that represents Christ's body.
  • Protestant Interpretations:
Protestant scholars tend to favor a more literal translation, such as "daily" or "necessary for existence," emphasizing God's provision for daily needs.
  • Linguistic Debate:
The word's unique appearance in the Gospels makes its precise meaning a subject of ongoing scholarly debate.
In essence, "epiousios" represents a nuanced and possibly unique word choice by the gospel writers to convey a specific meaning related to bread and its significance in the context of prayer and faith. Some scholars on Reddit argue that it could be connected to the Eucharist or the concept of God's provision for daily needs.

"He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD." Det 8:3

My limited understanding is "our daily bread" should be a daily study and meditation on the word of God.

John 6: 25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, "Rabbi, when did you come here?" 26 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will give to you; for on him has God the Father set his seal." 28 Then they said to him, "What must we do, to be doing the works of God?" 29 Jesus answered them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent." 30 So they said to him, "Then what sign do you do, that we may see, and believe you? What work do you perform? 31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heaven to eat.'" 32 Jesus then said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven, and gives life to the world." 34 They said to him, "Lord, give us this bread always."

Jesus gives us His flesh and blood to eat daily, and instead of them becoming part of us, we become part of Him.
