Between MacArthur, Dobson, Kirk and now Voddie, we have lost some true giants of the faith in a few short months. Prayers for his wife and 9 children. He will be missed.

I actually can't believe how young he was. I first heard him speak in 1997. I can't believe he was only 28 then!

Love that man. Just watched his last message on the way home from work today. Major heart issues in 2021... glad he was with us as long as he was.

Great story and legacy.

No longer a sojourner or exile. No longer a stranger in a strange land. Glad you're home Voddie!

Just saw the news a few minutes ago. This is so sad, but to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Between Charlie Kirk and now Voddie, this is a tough few weeks for many believers to lose two great champions of the faith.

I just watched him yesterday. What terrible news to wake up to.
God loves you so much He'll meet you where you are. He also loves you too much to allow to stay where you are.

He first gained my attention as a former tight end for Rice football team…. I kept up with him for his powerful message!

Didn't know who he was. Seemed like quite a guy. With all of the highly educated women in my family and our 6 public-schooled kids, we probably wouldn't have been drinking buddies, but that's how the SBC rolls.

Curious what you intended with the SBC comment. While Voddie did plant Grace Family Baptist (SBC member) and he was sent as a missionary via that church, he most likely would have really shaken up the SBC as an organization if they had elected him president a few years ago.

Furthermore to your comment about your public school children, Voddie was a fearless advocate of homeschooling and that piece of it is really how he has impacted our family the most with our own convictions to homeschool.

I was referring to the complementary phonies at Southwestern, like Paige Patterson. The SBC has always been complementarian, but women were much more prominent in leadership 50 years ago than they are today. Regardless of where you come down on this issue, I recommend The Making of Biblical Womanhood. It will make you really think about things and ask what is doctrinal, and what is cultural. And, beyond that, you can see that things that are often presented as doctrinal are often done so to justify power structures.

Also, I'm glad homeschooling worked for you. I have 6 kids. We have 504's, IEP's, neurodivergence, ESL, 4 in GT, 1 in remedial, a D1 athlete, a Ph.D. scientist, one learning her 6th language...homeschooling would have been impossible, and my wife and I have 17 years of college!

Anyway, you may have come along after this, but I hope you managed to avoid the Bill Gothard cult that tortured so many families when I was growing up.

What's crazy is me, thinking it would get less complicated once they grew up.

My father in law tried to indoctrinate our kids and me into the Bill Gothard camp. Paid for all of us to go to the meetings. Paid for reading materials, etc. it was way too cultish for me and I politely got my kids away from that. And they turned out great. Even though they listened to secular rock and roll music. And danced.

It turned out not to just be countercultural. That dude is a real creeper. If you wanna see just how messed up that whole movement was, go do a deep dive on Paul Pressler. High up operative in the Republican Party and Southwestern Seminary, declined a salary in exchange for a constant supply of young male interns...ahem. These were the people behind the Family Values movement.

I've derailed enough. Too much. Voddie seemed like an authentic Christian dude, and I'm sure I would have liked him.

I helped an Afghan family move to Houston a few years ago. They also have 6 kids. The father was the head of pediatric surgery in Kabul. Obviously these people had helped the US is some way. Who knows what trauma they had been through. Anyway, the wife couldn't read! I thought, how extreme, but then I remembered, there's a point when meddling becomes oppression, "moral suasion" becomes persecution, and a culture becomes harmfully capricious with its pronouncements. My daughters pursue what they want. Jesus hasn't gotten mad yet.

can we take the homeschool talk to a different thread and leave this one for the remembrance of a great man of God?

The homeschool talk originated by the very fact that it is something he stood strongly for, because of his God centered convictions. It is likely one of the things I will always take with me.

I always like how Voddie said you need to be winsome when sharing the gospel and contending for the faith.

That has stuck with me.

His conversations on Catechisms with his kids were pretty thought provoking. We never got as intense as he advocated for but my kids and i had some really good conversations in their younger years.
