John 19:26-27
"When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home."
Catholics believe that the words of Jesus apply to all people of all time, and not just to the people who were there at the time. Since we are all disciples of Jesus, His words apply to us today and to all disciples. Facing death, Jesus, in His last will and....testament..., gives humanity His only possession, His blessed Mother. Just as Eve became the physical mother of the living at the foot of the tree of knowledge of good and evil in Genesis, Mary becomes our spiritual mother at the foot of the tree of life, aka the Cross.
To re-emphasize this gift of His to us, Revelation 12:17 says that we are her children IF we obey the commandments and bear testimony that Jesus is the Christ:
Revelation 12: 1:7 Then the dragon was angry with the woman, and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring, on those who keep the commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea.
And now you know why Jesus always referred to Mary as "Woman," The Woman from Genesis 3:15 who is at enmity with satan, and whose seed will crush the head of the serpent (women don't have seeds, they have eggs, so this has to be one very special woman, one who conceived virginally)...
As Gabriel said," HAIL FULL OF GRACE!"
