Sometimes, it's good to laugh at yourself...

I have always been curious how the resident Catholic folks on here take this kind of stuff. I almost started a thread last month after a comedy event my wife and I went to. There was a good 5-10 mins on Christian humor, with the lion's share being aimed at Catholics and some of the stereotypes that have been around for a while.

I have been around enough Catholics either at school or the workplace to even have them make these jokes about themselves or acknowledge they fall into the different stereotypes, like how Catholics are mostly CEOs (Christmas and Easter Only), like to party, don't know the Bible, etc. I would not characterize those I have interacted with on here as any of that, for the record.

Why is it that Catholics seem to be an easy target as it relates to poking fun of like this? I would imagine it is irritating to have professing Catholics exacerbate some of these caricatures.

We are easy targets because most non-Catholics don't understand why we do what we do...Most of the "weird" stuff that protestants don't understand comes from Judaism and the OT....

Speaking from my high horse here! Catholics and Jews are the only non-moving targets in beliefs and the largest individual religious groups/denominations so you're going to relate to more people. How many people in America know enough about the current strains of Methodism to make/understand jokes about them? Also, usually we don't mind generally because 1) we have been properly formed to have a sense of humor and 2) if they're making fun of us then they must think were onto something!

And for those writing the jokes: I much prefer "Papist" to "Romanist", tyvm!

I wouldn't say non-moving. Steady for sure though ;-)

If you make jokes you need everyone to get it and 2B Catholics make an easy target.
