While some might pray for hope or peace in such dark times, others are praying for the death of Texas Democrat James Talarico, who is running for the U.S. Senate. During a recent episode of the right-wing Protestant podcast Reformation Red Pill, host Joshua Haymes told the pastor Brooks Potteiger that he prays that "God kills" Talarico, given that the politician seems to be possessed by demons. Potteiger agreed, offering that Talarico should be "crucified with Christ."

"You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies." John 8:44

Let he who is without sin be the first to pray that God kills the one you don't fully agree with.

Imprecatory Psalms are definitely a thing, but this guy seems over the top.

My Bible readings this morning included Luke 23 34 when Jesus says "Father forgive them for they know not what they do". Far cry from wanting them crucified.

Did anybody bother to go back and listen to their podcast for the context, or are we just running with what the media said they said? The clips I saw make it clear that this isn't a call to kill him

Yeah, I haven't even clicked on all the links but assume they are evangelicals referring to him dying to his old ways and being born again.

I don't agree with them publicly judging others (unless it's very precise and limited...'that Catholic politician has enabled and promoted abortion and should not take communion') but agree that it's likely the media is inflating it into something they didn't at all mean.

I agree that they were likely referring to more of a metaphorical crucifixion. That said, why would someone even use that language? Why not say something like you hope the "Holy Spirit removes the veils from his eyes". Using language that is easily misunderstood as inflammatory seems foolhardy at best and malicious at worst.

Why say Talarico is being influenced by demons? Theological debates have been going on since the beginning of theology. To declare a difference in theological interpretation is an indicator of demonic possession/influence is a red flag to me. It's a lot like politicians saying "Real Americans do such-and-such." This pastor is basically saying, "Real Christians believe xyz"... effectively calling Talarico a fake Christian.

my knee jerk reaction is that there is all sorts of inflammatory language in the Bible

but I have not really dug into this instance mentioned in this thread

To your first paragraph, "crucified with Christ" is biblical language. I agree it may not sit well with a broader, non-Christian audience, but this is from a podcast where they are speaking to Christians that tune into their show. I don't think it's fair to say they should change their language to something non-listeners find more appropriate.

Talarico said that Mary's "yes" is something that can be used as an argument for being pro-choice. Using the Mother of God as evidence that abortion should be an option is pretty horrible in the eyes of the average Christian and I think it's fair to call that out with some force behind it

I am flying and did not listen to the podcast. Guilty as charged.

It could be interpreted as threatening or not. A lot of the times when people say things like that they are perfectly aware of the ambiguity and in fact the plausible deniability is exactly why they use the phrase in the first place.

Maybe. But reading the authors bio, if the comments were "ambiguous" statements quoting Paul, she should have known. The sub title of the article makes it clear her actual intents.

Google the name of the podcast and Talarico. You will find a laundry list of leftist writers pointing out that the guy who "said it" is Pete Hegseth's "spiritual advisor".

Smells like a hit piece to me. F16 material.
