For the record I don't pretend it does not exist - I have repeatedly said that it does happen. And has happened for years and years and years But the evidence given for a rampant anti gay crime wave just isn't there.

It's 20% fact (because it does happen) and 80% embellishment (because people are trying to make a point and blame someone or a group of people collectively for a "rise" that doesn't exist).

And why would I not want to believe it? I have friends who live there - gay friends (here we go....now you get to scoff at the "i have gay friends" defense but i do)....who live in that area and I also have one straight married friend who lives there. Was just there last Thursday night actually.

If my friends were being targeted I would want to know and have something done about it. Oddly none of them ever mention this anti gay crime wave.

And I don't need to google more stories - I've seen dozens thanks (back to 2008) and all were robberies except the two mentioned in the article you provided. And you provided one that was clearly a robbery (perhaps with a gay slur thrown in) so I'm guessing there aren't other ones with no robberies.

It was short-lived thing while it lasted. But for a brief time there was some concern. Not during the daytime, but leaving places at night. Its not a controversy either way, imo.

Good advice. It seems wise to just leave things as they stand. There is no right answer in this kind of debate of what a given set of crimes (Oak Lawn, not this hoax in Chicago) mean.
