Quote:

David Relman, a microbiologist at Stanford University, says a lab leak was never the subject of a "fair and dispassionate discussion of the facts as we know them." Instead, tempers soon began to flare as those calling for a closer look at possible lab origins were dismissed as conspiracy theorists spouting misinformation. Election-year politics and growing Sinophobic sentiments only added to the tensions. Attacks on Asian-Americans had been escalating since the pandemic began, and with then-president Trump fuming about a "Chinese virus," many scientists and reporters became "cautious about saying anything that might justify the rhetoric of his administration," says Jamie Metzl, a senior fellow at the Washington, DCbased Atlantic Council, an international affairs think tank.

Plus, it's much harder to blame Trump for a man made (or at least man released) virus through possibly negligence but allowed to spread internationally by absolute malicious intention

As always, Truth must defer to The Narrative

Technically yes but 90%+ of them are being committed by black and Hispanic youths against elderly Asians in the west coast leftist cities

They are trying to blame all of it on "white supremacy" of course

Per FBI database:

28% of violent crimes committed against Asians are committed by blacks (only 13% of US population)...24% by whites (60% of US population)...there is something to this racism claim...just not what is being claimed.
“It was miraculous. It was almost no trick at all, he saw, to turn vice into virtue and slander into truth, impotence into abstinence, arrogance into humility, plunder into philanthropy, thievery into honor, blasphemy into wisdom, brutality into patriotism, and sadism into justice. Anybody could do it; it required no brains at all. It merely required no character.”

Another social media violent "game" competition that emerged, combined with the perception that they represented easy targets for violence and perhaps some local community resentment.

I don't think the rhetoric around the pandemic had anything at all to do with it.

The most frustrating thing to me is how the left automatically and reflexively conflates race with nationality when it can leverage power from doing so, no matter how deceptive and misleading or inaccurate the conflation is. The Chinese ethnically are a conglomeration of Asian cultures from the same geographical area that have bled over into each other under a series of authoritarian regimes to form a lasting superculture, one that was then subsumed by communism as a large part of its culture.

Imagine if Trump had gone to rallies and just said, "this is not a Chinese Virus" and "it was not manufactured in a Wahun lab to wreck the 2020 US voting process". Scientists and WHO would be racing to investigate with pressure from media pushing a narrative to counter Trump.

If we called it the China virus, and if the US population generally believed it escaped from a Wuhan lab (which it probably did), then Trump would still be president.

That's the politics.

Never has China had so much at stake and never has a world leader ever put China on blast like that 24/7. Look at what Trump was doing to their trade, privacy violations/cell market share, stealing of IP, dumping, election interference, bribing, climate change, Hong Kong, and most of all Taiwan.

Its not crazy for a few Chinese masterminds to devise a strategy to release a very contagious virus with 99% survival rate, and kill anyone at risk of squealing. Worst case they cull the weak from their own population, best case it allows dems remove Trump via a pandemic justified unsolicited mass mail in voting process.

As to the OP, the circumstances surrounding the lab are so suspicious that I would need to see strong evidence the virus was NOT from the lab in order to eliminate that hypothesis.

I mean... Here we have literally the only place in China that does research on these viruses, and we are to believe that a novel virus of this type just happened to emerge at a wet market a few hundred yards away?

It would be like saying you got radiation poisoning from the precious gem store that was down the street from the Chernobyl nuclear plant.

I think the scenario of reckless experimentation with viruses modified somewhat to be easier to replicate and use for experimentation with human analog and human cell cultures. This is exactly the type of high risk research that US sources were funding in the Wuhan high security lab.

An accidental release scenario is quite a reasonable and simple explanation, and once it was out, it was immediately subject to communist party policy and ethics, namely, cover up and politically exploit as needed because the party does not make errors. First was distraction and cover up, but once it escaped media and physical containment, it shifted into scapegoating and exploitation. Very likely the Chinese leadership decided early on they weren't going to suffer through this alone and would let it be carried globally by travel so that every nation might be more equally impeded by it.

Great point. Would love to see a map of huge China with all the wet markets plotted and virus labs plotted. Liberals sometimes need simple visuals.

There's more where that virus came from, and worse. Millions dead worldwide to save their economic position.

The article in the OP makes the case that many scientists, for political and financial reasons, refuse to consider any other hypothesis than the one pushed by the CCP.

It concludes by lamenting:

Quote:

"If we are at the point where all science is politicized and no one cares about truth and only being politically correct," he says, "we may as well give up and shut down and stop doing science."

Yes, you're at that point.

So if it becomes established fact that Covid came from the Wahun Institute of Virology, then what?

The debate becomes did China release a pandemic on the world by accident and random timing, or was it on purpose during Trump's re-election?

Just getting to that debate would be huge. So no wonder we aren't there.

Almost a smoking gun...

"This generated a startling result: the spike proteins studding SARS-CoV-2 bound more tightly to their human cell receptor, a protein called ACE2, than target receptors on any other species evaluated. In other words, SARS-CoV-2 was surprisingly well adapted to its human prey, which is unusual for a newly emerging pathogen. "Holy ****, that's really weird,'" Petrovsky recalls thinking."

For the hundredth time, Fauci was working with Gilead and the Wuhan virology lab on Remdesivir studies in 2019 (and likely before). The Chinese wanted the patent once they knew it was quite effective (with no side effects), and then said it was ineffective once the courts denied them that patent.

Pissed Chinese; sudden outbreak. They had the disease and its early "cure" in the same lab at the same time 18+ months ago.

I sent this to the news last April (including all the links), and not a peep about it because it made too much sense.

And this post is example #1 of why having a rational conversation about the origins of the Wuhan Virus is challenging.

Some scientists are saying that the Wuhan Lab was experimenting with the virus for legitimate reasons and accidentally leaked it.

Then this turns into...Fauci is an evil genius who pissed off the Chinese over patents to cause a global pandemic.

Occams Razor still applies.

It is my understanding that," the type of high risk research that US sources were funding in the Wuhan high security lab" had been banned in the US and Dr. Fauci used our taxpayer dollars to fund.
We really need to rewrite our laws concerning libel and slander.

I never said Fauci denied them any patents. He was part of the study's founding, and was a key advisor. The patent courts denied the patent because the Chinese were only the manufacturers before the trials began, but wanted rights to it once they discovered its efficacy. Fauci knew it worked, the world's stock markets soared for a few weeks (I owned Gilead stock during April-May), but then the markets all crashed when the Chinese said it didn't work. Fauci seemed so very surprised (like HCQ) that he was duped, which means he's a liar. We all know by now he's a liar.

If they were developing and using the virus for treatment research on human cell cultures then it makes sense for them to have engineered or selected or cultured it to most effectively target human host cells. That's probably why this type of research is banned in the USA. It is extremely risky if there is loss of containment. Sending such research to China to continue was a terrible idea, as we know how communist institutions are prone to cut corners and ignore risks.

And a PLA general responsible for virology research was rushed to the area rapidly. \

And China did not allow inspections access by the WHO as requested.

Something Libertarians have brought up that does rate attention is -- WHY did Republicans soft-pedal or refuse to investigate covid-19 origins so much? The Democrats were in the tank for using it to throw the election - -but what is the GOP excuse for no hearings?
