The families have filed suit against Washington State University. Runkle breaks down the suit here:

A lot of information in the suit about BK's interactions with students. According to the suit, multiple female students filed complaints against him and requested security escorts in fear of him. The school held a harassment education session for everyone in the program but it took place after so many filed complaints against Kohberger. Alleged to have been directly aimed at his behavior.

The question I have is a question of liability. How is WSU liable for anything? A paid TA and Phd student is creepy. How are they responsible for him killing people off campus in another city? If they fire him, he moves back to PA and kills someone in that town...now not liable?

Runkle thinks the facts are bad enough that WSU will settle quietly.

They might settle just avoid the press and scrutiny, but you are correct that there is no liability for WSU here if the law is followed. WSU has no duty whatsoever to four random kids who go to another college in another state and were murdered by a guy who just happened to be enrolled at WSU. Even if they had wanted to do something about Kohberger, what could they have done? Report some crude comments to the police? Report him for being a weirdo? Literally nothing WSU could have done would have prevented the murders or even diminished the chance of them happening. This is a straight money grab.

Idaho murder victims' families express outrage after crime scene photos accidentally released
