How did Florida do it?

I think we've all seen the hundreds of posts and comments about how every state needs to model Florida when it comes to elections.

Anybody have any good articles or anything discussing the details/technicals of what they actually implemented? What did they do that really tightens up security to minimize fraud and also allow them to report results faster than anyone?

One of the main arguments for absentee ballots is older folks who can't make it to polling locations but guessing FL has figured this out given the high retiree population.

Not sure all of all the details, but it starts with good leadership at the top that knows how to assess, plan, and implement. DeSantis has all that, plus the legal chops to make sure it sticks.

Having a Republican House and Senate is key as well because Democrats will fight tooth and nail to stop anything that assures election integrity.

It's really not that hard. I'm a FL resident, but spend the summer/fall in NY, so I vote absentee every election.

A simple process. Once I registered (with proof of residency and citizenship), I was able to request the ballot online. After that, I can check online at the county election website to see when the ballot is sent to me, when it is received back with the state, and when it is counted.

Absentee votes are counted when received, so that there isn't a pile of them sitting around on election day that need to be counted. and They're counted electroncically, unless there is a write in name. Votes cast at the polling location use the two step process that allows you to confirm your choices with the paper ballot before feeding it in to the reader.

https://www.duvalelections.gov/Voter-Information/New-Changes-in-Florida-Election-Laws

Quote:

The Florida Legislature passed SB 90, an election administration bill revising certain sections of the Florida Election Code. On May 6, 2021 Governor DeSantis signed the bill into law, with immediate effect. A brief explanation of changes that may affect voters is provided here:

VOTER REGISTRATION UPDATES
The new law does not change the process for new voter registration applications. However, applications to update an existing voter registration record will now require additional information, necessary to establish an applicant's identity and eligibility.

Name and party changes must be submitted on a Florida Voter Registration Application and must include voter's Florida Driver License number or Florida ID Card number or the last four digits of his/her Social Security number.

Address changes within the state may be submitted to the Supervisor of Elections by phone or email and must include voter's Florida Driver License number or Florida ID Card number or the last four digits of his/her Social Security number, whichever may be verified in the supervisor's records. Address changes may also be submitted on a Voter Registration Application or other written notice.

VOTE-BY-MAIL REQUESTS
One request for a Vote-by-Mail ballot will cover all elections through the end of the calendar year of the next scheduled general election. All requests currently on file will be good through the end of 2024.

A voter requesting a Vote-by-Mail ballot for himself/herself in writing, in person or by phone must provide:
Voter's name
Voter's address
Voter's date of birth
Voter's Florida Driver License or Florida ID Card number, or the last four digits of his/her Social Security number
Voter's signature (written requests only)

An immediate family member or legal guardian requesting a ballot on behalf of a voter must provide, in addition to the voter's information above:
Requestor's name
Requestor's address
Requestor's date of birth
Requestor's Florida Driver License or Florida ID Card number or last four of his/her Social Security number
Requestor's relationship to the voter
Requestor's signature (written requests only)

A designee who is picking up or returning Vote-by-Mail ballots for another voter, may lawfully possess only his or her own ballot and those of immediate family members, in addition to two other ballots. Immediate family includes spouse or parent, child, grandparent, grandchild, or sibling of the designee or designee's spouse.
RETURN OF VOTE-BY-MAIL BALLOT
Secure drop boxes (now officially known as Secure Ballot intake stations) will be provided and monitored by election personnel at all early voting sites during posted hours of operation. The location of Vote-by-Mail Secure Ballot intake stations will be published on our website at least 30 days prior to each election.

forgot to mention. FL doesn't give DL to illegal immigrants, and they don't recognize a DL any II has from another state.

Paper ballots go through a scanner, and I think the numbers are automatically sent to the county or Tallahassee.

What takes the longest in Florida is counting mail in ballots, verifying signatures and scanning those. But I think they actually start that before Election Day. And they have 2 or 3 weeks of early voting.

So when polls close, there isn't that much counting left, it's already been done by the scanners as the votes are cast.

It's mostly just adding up the numbers and I think getting the last round of mailed ballots.

Also, to vote by mail in Florida you have to make a request to the county. They do not send every voter a ballot like some states have started doing (I think California does this for example). So they have less vote by mail I think l, it's an option, but only proactive voters are going to go through the trouble since it's pretty easy to just early vote. The hours of early voting are like 8 am-8pm, 7 days a week, and there are lots of locations.

Friend of mine was an election worker in Florida and told me all of this.

Now I have to assume the vote numbers are hidden or kept secret until after polls close, but the scanners are counting the votes as they are cast.

That's how the numbers come in so fast.

I don't see why you'd do it any other way.

Florida had 100% reporting in about 2-1/2 hours after polls closed.

The biggest thing is mail-in ballots being able to be verified AND counted as soon as they come in. If anny ballots need to be cured, they're mostly done prior to Election Day. Arizona is taking forever because they can't even get started verifying signatures until the polls close.

What you described sounds like what we do here in Arizona. There is obviously something else to it cuz we suk.

And just think in 2004 they were the worst hanging chad and all. Fla has come a long way with great leadership. Probably the best in the nation.

Edit: it was the 2000 race.

Wasn't that 2000? Either way, yes, FL is living proof that election processes can go from ****-show to a model of efficiency, transparency, and fairness.

I bet Floridians trust the hell out of their election processes.

The fundamental problem is that blue states are voting in super high numbers (up to 90%) with mail in ballots that have to be signature verified.

This practice needs to be stopped for federal elections. We need a constitutional amendment, frankly.

Very useful thread. So how close is Texas to getting this good at it? Is it Phelan types that keep it from happening, as often enough, we do have Republican majorities.

TheBigAggiecorps

C'mon Texas will never come close when it comes to that aspect

It's just the bitter truth

Intriguing point if it is very similar. In coverage it seems so different. So yes, discovering just what makes it "broken" there or not quite work, could be really useful.

If your mail in or drop off is received at least 2-days prior to election day it is processed. I dropped mine at my local city hall and followed it all the way through count with text alerts. If it is dropped the day before or on election day it will be counted last. The curing process is super slow and you have 3 days to cure your ballot. Bottom line, Maricopa county is super corrupt. The County Recorder, Stephen Richer, is a democrat in RINO clothing and will impede in any way he can. Fortunately in the fall primary, he lost. But, the McCain wing if the Republican party is more than willing to collude with the democrats to stop any real conservative or MAGA candidate.

Even though he's dead and gone, and I respect his service, he was worthless. His wife Cindy still has great influence here. We'll get there. AZ has always floated between blue and red. The California, Oregon and Washington migration hasn't helped either.

Sure, we have a lot of snow birds but they aren't immobile or reluctant to get out. Quite active actually since they hop between states twice a year. I live on the Space Coast and I encountered a big amount of seniors when I voted.

When I voted, it went like this. I presented my photo ID and then gave a signature example for comparison. This is part of election security legislation that occurred here.

Bucking the conventional Wu-Flu wisdom early and opening the state helped drive us deeper red. People here red-pilled (pun intended) and we attracted new residents (Don't NY my Florida).

Good leadership in Tallahassee. Good local leadership in most counties. We're trending redder and redder. Hopefully DeSantis's successor is similarly strong in leadership. Amazing to think he eeked out a win over a drugee leftist gay man.

I just got back from camping at a Florida State Park.

Everything the Florida State government runs is efficient, well kept, well oiled, and done with quality.

I actually do my grocery shopping there to save on taxes cause Bama is higher. But I am always impressed with every state park, facility, and employee I encounter over there. It should be no surprise......

DeSantis 2028. Keep America Greatest.
