What the hell is going on in the US Senate? Hours after Donald Trump wins the most conclusive mandate in 40 years, Mitch McConnell engineers a coup against his agenda by calling early leadership elections in the senate. Two of the three candidates hate Trump and what he ran on.
One of them, John Cornyn, is an angry liberal whose politics are indistinguishable from Liz Cheney's. The election is Wednesday, it's by secret ballot, and it will determine whether or not the new administration succeeds. Rick Scott of Florida is the only candidate who agrees with Donald Trump. Call your senator and demand a public endorsement of Rick Scott. Don't let McConnell get away with it again.

Cruz has been vocally fighting McConnell since day 1. He is the one who engineered the contest of McConnell 2 years ago and how he did exactly this. Of all the people to attack this is like saying "Why is Trump opposed to building a wall?"

ETA. Both parties appear to have their Senate leadership elections before year end which seems odd since the new Senators haven't been seated and in cases like GA where you frequently have runoffs, they don't even know who will be seated.

Because Cruz is weak. He's smart enough, but he doesn't have any leadership qualities. The Cancun debacle was telling - not because he went to Cancun - because the people he was asking to go with him tried to sabotage his career.
